The University of Mount Union recently announced the passing of their head golf coach, Bill Kirkwood, at the age of 65. Kirkwood had been a part of the Mount Union community since 2014 and had been battling CLL/SLL, a type of lymphoma/leukemia, while still continuing to coach his teams on a daily basis. Unfortunately, earlier this year, Kirkwood was diagnosed with CNS, another rare form of lymphoma/leukemia, and passed away this week.
Originally from Cleveland, Kirkwood had coached both the men’s and women’s golf teams at Mount Union for several years. Under his leadership, the women’s team had the opportunity to compete at nationals for three consecutive years. In addition to his coaching duties, Kirkwood led the fundraising efforts for the construction of the Melvin J. Snode Golf Center, which opened in 2022 at Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio. This center provided his players with the tools and advantages needed to succeed.
In 1997, Kirkwood married his wife Sue, and together they shared a beloved pet named Mugsy, who also served as the mascot for the golf teams. Kirkwood’s impact on his players, staff, and the entire Mount Union community was profound, and his presence will surely be missed. To honor Kirkwood’s memory, the family has requested that individuals observe a moment of silence on October 6th at 6:30 p.m. as a tribute to his life and legacy.
In lieu of cards and flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to the Life Care of Wooster and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in memory of Kirkwood. This gesture not only honors his memory but also supports causes that were important to him during his battle with cancer. Kirkwood’s dedication to his players and his passion for the game of golf will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will live on through the continued success of the golf program at Mount Union.
