Here’s why Turnberry is unveiling one of the most expensive greens fees in golf

In 2025, the cost of a tee time at the Ailsa Course at Turnberry will increase to £545, with peak fees reaching up to £1,000. This makes Turnberry one of the most expensive golf courses in the world, with prices close to $700 per person and nearly $1,300 during peak times. The highest-priced tee times are restricted to pre-1 p.m. slots during high season, allowing more access for visitors at the hotel and members. Post-1 p.m. tee times for out-of-towners will still be expensive at £545, but not as high as the peak rates.

Turnberry’s pricing shift is part of a broader trend in the golf industry towards “flex pricing,” where courses charge more during peak times. This strategy allows resorts like Turnberry to guarantee tee times for guests staying on the property, increasing the value for both businesses. Charging a significant amount to play one of the best golf courses in the world during the rest of the year is just the cost of doing business in this competitive industry.

Despite the high fees, visiting Turnberry during the high season offers the unique experience of playing under the Scottish sun until late in the evening. With approximately five hours of tee times available, players can enjoy a full round of golf in the picturesque setting. The decision of whether the high prices are worth the experience ultimately depends on each individual and their financial situation.

The Ailsa Course at Turnberry is ranked as the 18th best course in the world by GOLF’s course raters, offering a challenging and scenic championship test. Located on the coast of Scotland, the course features a craggy cliffside and stunning views that make it a popular destination for golfers. The sunrise and sunset views at Turnberry are described as close to a spiritual experience, adding to the allure of playing at this iconic course.

Other top golf courses around the world, such as TPC Sawgrass and Pebble Beach, also have high pricing for peak tee times, placing Turnberry in rarefied air among elite golf destinations. The popularity of these courses and the limited availability of tee times during peak hours contribute to the high costs associated with playing them. While the price may seem steep, for many avid golfers, the opportunity to play at renowned courses like Turnberry is a dream come true.

In conclusion, the rising greens fees at Turnberry reflect the increasing demand for tee times at top golf courses and the trend towards flex pricing in the industry. Despite the high costs, the unique experience of playing at a championship-level course like the Ailsa Course at Turnberry is a draw for many golf enthusiasts. Whether players are willing to pay the premium prices for a round at Turnberry during the high season is a personal decision that balances the value of the experience with the financial investment required.
