From Tennis Courts to Golf Courses: Andy Roddick’s Passion for the Game

By: John McAlley
Published: June 4, 2025

Andy Roddick, a name synonymous with tennis glory, is now making waves off the court as a passionate golfer and podcast host. The former U.S. Open champion has transitioned smoothly from serving aces on the tennis court to teeing off on lush golf courses. His newfound love for golf began shortly after retirement, and it’s a story of dedication, passion, and some surprising encounters that deserve a closer look.

A Late Getaway to Golf

Roddick’s journey into golf didn’t start until after he hung up his tennis racket at the age of 30. The competitive spirit that fueled his tennis career quickly found a new outlet as he took up golf during a two-year period of unemployment. “I played golf like five days a week,” Roddick recalls, emphasizing how freshly retired life opened up the doors to this new passion. He would often be found on the tee by 8:00 a.m., embracing the therapeutic nature of the game.

The Therapeutic Nature of Golf

For Roddick, golf provided an escape and a unique form of therapy during his adjustment to life post-tennis. “In my last years on tour, I was trying to hold onto my ability,” he explains, indicating a contrast between the competitive pressure of tennis and the joy he found in golf. Unlike the intense pursuit of maintaining competitive prowess, golf allowed him to embrace the learning process, and it quickly became a source of fun and relaxation.

Unlikely Golfing Pros

When asked about his fellow tennis professionals who have taken up golf, Roddick names some surprisingly talented individuals. “Mardy Fish is the best; he’s like a plus-a-million handicap,” he jokes, highlighting the lighthearted nature of golf camaraderie. Other names include Ivan Lendl and Tim Henman, both of whom boast impressive golf skills. Even current tennis stars like Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have made remarkable transitions, with Nadal reportedly shaking off a scratch rating and Murray impressively improving his handicap after retirement.

Roddick’s Golf Performance

Curious about Roddick’s own golfing achievements, one wonders just how good he has become in the last few years. “At one point, I was barely scratch for a cup of coffee due to two fluke rounds,” he admits. Normally, his handicap hovers between a two and three, showcasing his apt skills despite starting later than most. This achievement reflects not only his athleticism but also his unwavering commitment to improving his game.

Business Ventures in Golf

Roddick’s investment in golf extends beyond just playing; he is now a co-owner of Sweetens Cove, a popular golf course, along with a stake in Intown Golf Club, a luxury golf simulator startup. Moreover, he has ventured into tech with Whoosh, a software company aimed at optimizing golf course operations. These initiatives highlight his commitment to the sport and showcase his entrepreneurial spirit.

Memories from Augusta National

Roddick’s charming anecdotes also reveal a surprising twist that further solidifies his love for golf. In 2011, he had the unique opportunity to caddie for Zach Johnson during the Par 3 Contest at the Masters. “It was completely random,” Roddick shares, describing the spontaneous invitation that led him to Augusta National for the first time. The experience was surreal, encountering legends like Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods in the flesh.

A Memorable Caddying Experience

The caddying opportunity turned out to be a humorously daunting task, as Roddick was handed a heavy bag instead of the lighter load he expected. “Zach gave me the really heavy bag to carry,” he laughs, reminiscing about the amusing switcheroo. It was a moment that captured the light-hearted spirit of the game, reminding Roddick (and the spectators) that golf is not just about competition; it is also about enjoyment and shared experiences.

The Thrill of Being “Airdropped into Golf Heaven”

Roddick reflects on the extraordinary nature of the event. “I was thrust into golf heaven, meeting some of the greatest players in the sport’s history,” he says. His astonishment at casually mingling with icons like Phil Mickelson adds a layer of excitement. This experience solidified his love for the game, emphasizing its community and the incredible moments one can encounter on and off the course.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Roddick’s Golf Journey

As Roddick continues to explore the vast world of golf, there’s no doubt that his story will evolve. With each round played and each new venture undertaken, he embodies the spirit of a lifelong learner. Whether behind the mic of his podcast or out on the fairways, Roddick exemplifies a mission to celebrate the game he has embraced with open arms.

In an era where athletes frequently switch sports or engage in various ventures post-retirement, Roddick’s unique journey serves as an inspiration. His shift from tennis legend to golf enthusiast illustrates not only a seamless transition but also a rich commitment to seeking new challenges and joys in life. With a promising future ahead, Andy Roddick stands as a testament to the evolving nature of sports and the boundless opportunities they present.
