The U.S. Open may have concluded a month ago, but the disappointment surrounding Rory McIlroy’s performance is still a hot topic in the golf world. Golf analyst Smylie Kaufman recently discussed McIlroy’s performance on Golf’s Subpar podcast, suggesting that McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, could have been more helpful during the crucial moments of the tournament. Kaufman specifically pointed out a critical club selection error on the 15th hole that impacted McIlroy’s chances of winning the championship.

Kaufman highlighted that McIlroy’s caddie, Harry Diamond, did not intervene when McIlroy chose the wrong club on the 15th hole, leading to a missed opportunity to take control of the championship. Despite Diamond’s performance being scrutinized for almost a decade, some argue that McIlroy prefers to rely on his own instincts and feel rather than extensive advice from his caddie. Kaufman noted that McIlroy usually takes charge of his shots but may need to reevaluate certain situations, especially after the disappointing outcome on the 15th hole.

Following the club selection mishap on the 15th hole, McIlroy went on to bogey subsequent holes and ultimately lost to Bryson DeChambeau by one shot at the U.S. Open. Despite the defeat, McIlroy has not expressed any intention to part ways with his caddie, Harry Diamond. McIlroy’s decision to stick with Diamond suggests a level of loyalty towards his caddie, even in the face of criticism from analysts like Kaufman.

As McIlroy prepares to tee it up at the upcoming Scottish Open, the focus remains on his performance at the U.S. Open and the role his caddie played in the outcome. The golf world continues to analyze the dynamics between McIlroy and Diamond, speculating on potential changes in their partnership moving forward. While the debate over McIlroy’s caddie choice continues, the golf community eagerly anticipates McIlroy’s future tournaments and whether any adjustments will be made to his caddie-player relationship. The ongoing discussion surrounding McIlroy’s caddie highlights the intricate dynamics between players and their caddies in professional golf tournaments.
