GOLF Top 100 Teacher Tina Tombs has shared a simple drill to improve your contact with the ball in golf. In a video posted on the LPGA Professionals YouTube page, Tombs explains the importance of good contact in various aspects of the game, such as tee shots, approaches, and close-range chips. The drill involves drawing a white line in the turf perpendicular to your feet and practicing swinging to consistently brush the grass across the line to identify the low point or bottom arc of your swing.

Tombs emphasizes that being comfortable hitting the white line will lead to good contact with the ball. This fundamental skill is crucial for hitting the ball consistently on the center of the face and at the bottom of the arc, resulting in great shots. Once you can consistently hit the white line, you can progress to hitting balls placed directly in front of the line. This drill also helps with clubface alignment, allowing you to assess whether your clubface is straight, crooked, aimed to the right or left, or straight.

By using two tees to find the low point, players can further refine their technique and improve their contact with the ball. Tombs demonstrates hitting the ball on the line and notes that even when the white line is slightly missed with the bottom of the arc, hitting the ball in the center of the face can still lead to a good shot. She emphasizes the importance of consistency in hitting the white line and how even misses can be as good as your best shots, leading to great golf performance overall.

For golfers looking to enhance their skills, Tombs’ drill offers a practical and effective method to improve contact with the ball. By focusing on hitting the white line consistently and assessing clubface alignment, players can build confidence in their ability to make solid contact. The visual aid provided by the white line helps golfers to understand their swing and make necessary adjustments to achieve better results on the course. Incorporating this drill into regular practice sessions can lead to noticeable improvements in ball striking and overall performance.

Incorporating drills like the one shared by Tina Tombs into your practice routine can help elevate your game and enhance your skills on the golf course. By focusing on fundamentals such as contact with the ball and clubface alignment, players can improve their consistency and accuracy in their shots. Developing a strong foundation in these key areas can lead to better performance across all aspects of the game, from tee shots to approaches and short game shots. Practicing these drills regularly and incorporating them into your training regimen can help you achieve better results and elevate your overall level of play in golf.
