Stephen Jensen from Cornwall secured his second English Senior Men’s Amateur championship title in three years after a thrilling final against Leicestershire’s Steve Sansome at Brancepeth Castle. The 58-year-old experienced a miraculous turnaround, coming back from a 5-hole deficit to claim victory on the 18th hole in dramatic fashion. The match took place under sunny skies, with both players making comfortable pars on the first two holes before the action heated up on the 3rd when Jensen faced a ball search situation.

Jensen found himself in the short rough and had to head back to the tee after the three-minute mark had passed, ultimately conceding the hole to Sansome. Despite this setback, the two players continued to battle it out, with Sansome winning three holes in a row to take a commanding lead. However, Jensen fought back, making a tremendous up-and-down on the 10th hole to reduce the deficit to three holes. He then brought it back to 2-up with strong play on the 11th and 12th holes, setting the stage for a thrilling finish.

With momentum on his side, Jensen continued to showcase his skills, sinking a stunning 25-foot putt on the 13th hole to halve it in birdies. The match remained all-square until the 15th hole when Sansome three-putted, giving Jensen the lead for the first time. The players halved the 16th and 17th holes, leading to a tense final hole where both players hit excellent tee shots. Jensen’s approach shot landed just inches from the hole, setting up a birdie to secure the victory.

Reflecting on his win, Jensen expressed his delight at being crowned the English champion once again, emphasizing the honor of being a national champion. He expressed his desire to defend his title at Burhill the following year, highlighting the significance of the championship in the golf calendar. The final match between Jensen and Sansome showcased the competitive spirit and skill of senior amateur golfers, captivating fans with its twists and turns.

The picturesque setting of Brancepeth Castle provided the backdrop for the thrilling final, with both players demonstrating their prowess on the course. Jensen’s resilience and determination were evident as he staged a remarkable comeback to claim the championship title. His performance under pressure and ability to overcome challenges showcased his experience and skill as a seasoned golfer. The match served as a testament to the competitive nature of senior amateur golf and the excitement it can generate among players and fans alike.

As Jensen celebrates his victory, the golf community looks forward to seeing him defend his title in the coming year and continue to showcase his talent on the national stage. The English Senior Men’s Amateur championship remains a prestigious and highly anticipated event in the golf calendar, attracting top senior players from across the country. Jensen’s success in securing his second championship title in three years further solidifies his reputation as a standout player in the senior amateur circuit. His remarkable performance and thrilling final match against Sansome will be remembered as a highlight of the championship, showcasing the skill and sportsmanship of senior amateur golfers.
