Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay returns to full-time TV role on NBC and Golf Channel

Jim “Bones” Mackay, renowned for his successful career as a caddie for Phil Mickelson, has transitioned from carrying 14 clubs in a PGA Tour bag to holding just a microphone as part of NBC Sports. Sam Flood, the executive producer of NBC Sports and president of production, confirmed that Bones has signed a multi-year deal to be a full-time member of the NBC Sports team. Flood expressed excitement about the long-term partnership with Bones, stating that he will be an integral part of NBC Sports for years to come.

Bones had previously been announced as part of the broadcast team for NBC Sports/Golf Channel’s coverage of the U.S. Open, where he had caddied for Mickelson in previous tournaments. In a phone call with Golfweek, Bones expressed his happiness with the new opportunity, calling it the perfect scenario for him at this stage of his life. The 59-year-old caddie-turned-analyst is highly regarded in the golf community for his expertise and popularity.

Having spent 25 years as Mickelson’s caddie before joining NBC in 2017, Bones quickly established himself as one of the best on-course reporters in the business. Despite taking a break from his TV role to caddie for Justin Thomas in 2021, the duo won the 2022 PGA Championship together at Southern Hills. Their partnership ended after the Valspar Championship in March, allowing Bones to focus once again on his broadcasting career.

Bones will continue to be involved in NBC’s golf coverage, including prestigious events like the British Open, FedEx Cup Playoff events, and other unofficial tournaments. He expressed willingness to contribute in any capacity that Flood and longtime NBC golf producer Tommy Roy see fit, but he expects to primarily serve as an on-course reporter. While he remains open to temporary caddying opportunities for non-NBC events, Bones emphasized that television is his main priority and focus moving forward.

As a seasoned veteran in the golf industry, Bones brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his role as a broadcaster. His transition from a successful caddie to a respected analyst has been well-received by fans and colleagues alike. With his engaging commentary and deep understanding of the game, Bones has cemented his place as a valuable asset to the NBC Sports team for years to come.
