Keegan Bradley, the U.S. captain for the 2025 Ryder Cup, expressed his desire to have the best players on his team without being concerned about their affiliations with the LIV Golf league, a Saudi-backed competition that has caused tension with the PGA Tour. Bradley emphasized the importance of having the top 12 players regardless of where they play, indicating his willingness to consider LIV players for the team. He highlighted the unpredictable nature of the golf world and acknowledged the need to wait and see how things evolve before making final decisions on player selections.

The issue of LIV Golf and its impact on Ryder Cup selections was previously addressed by Zach Johnson, the captain in the previous year. Johnson’s approach involved recognizing that players associated with the PGA of America, even if competing in other tours like LIV, could still accumulate points for Ryder Cup consideration. While he ultimately included LIV pro Brooks Koepka in his captain’s picks for the team, Johnson did not actively attend LIV events to scout players, citing his responsibilities on the PGA Tour where most of his team members were expected to come from.

During Johnson’s tenure as captain, questions arose about the possibility of monitoring LIV tournaments to assess potential team members. Johnson defended his decision not to attend these events, citing his ongoing commitments on the PGA Tour and his ability to evaluate players through televised broadcasts and other means. Bradley’s approach as the new captain indicates a more open stance towards considering LIV players for the Ryder Cup team, signaling a potential shift in strategy based on evolving circumstances in the golfing landscape.

Despite his successful partnership with Phil Mickelson in previous Ryder Cup competitions, Bradley ruled out the possibility of including Mickelson as a vice-captain for the upcoming event. He acknowledged Mickelson’s busy schedule and hinted at the veteran golfer’s potential to serve as a captain in the future. Bradley expressed admiration for their past achievements together and highlighted the impact of their Ryder Cup performances as some of his fondest memories in the game.

As the U.S. team prepares for the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black, Bradley remains focused on assembling a competitive squad capable of winning the tournament. His emphasis on selecting the best players, regardless of their affiliations or tour memberships, reflects a commitment to prioritizing performance and talent above all else. With the evolving dynamics of professional golf and the ongoing controversy surrounding LIV Golf, Bradley’s approach signals a willingness to adapt to changing circumstances and make strategic decisions that prioritize success on the world stage. As the captain, Bradley’s leadership and decision-making will play a crucial role in shaping the U.S. team’s composition and competitive edge in the upcoming Ryder Cup.
