Lauren Coughlin bounces back from Evian disappointment to clinch first LPGA title with strong finish at CPKC Women’s Open

Lauren Coughlin had an impressive victory in the CPKC Women’s Open in Calgary, Canada, marking her first LPGA victory. She responded from heartbreak in her last tournament to secure a commanding lead on the 71st hole with a decisive birdie on ‘the rink.’ Her one-under 71 allowed her to win by two strokes over Mao Saigo.

This win was particularly significant for Coughlin as it was her first career title in her 103rd LPGA start. She had faced challenges in her career, losing full-time status after her rookie season in 2018. However, a strong performance in the Pelican Women’s Championship in 2021 helped her regain status for the following season. The victory in Calgary also positions her well for a spot on the American Solheim Cup roster.

With the winner’s check of $390,000, Coughlin’s earnings for the season surpassed half of her career total. The victory was a culmination of her perseverance and dedication to the sport despite setbacks along the way. The win also solidifies her position as a formidable competitor on the LPGA Tour.

The tournament saw an unexpected three-way tie with two holes to play between Coughlin, Ryu, and Saigo. After a slow back nine from the final pairing, Coughlin was able to break away for a two-shot lead on the par-3 17th known as ‘the rink’ with a crucial birdie. She excelled on the short holes throughout the tournament, showcasing her skills and composure under pressure.

While Ryu and Saigo put up a strong fight, Coughlin’s steady performance ultimately secured her victory. Despite some challenges towards the end of the round, Coughlin maintained her focus and executed key shots when needed. Her ability to capitalize on opportunities and perform under pressure was instrumental in clinching the win.

Saigo’s impressive record round of 61 on Saturday helped her secure a strong finish in the tournament, finishing in second place. This performance also solidified her lead in the rookie of the year race, showcasing the talent and potential of emerging players on the LPGA Tour. Overall, the tournament featured a mix of established players and rising stars, setting the stage for exciting competitions ahead.

As Coughlin reflects on her journey to victory, she emphasizes the importance of perseverance and determination in achieving success in the sport. Her story serves as inspiration for aspiring golfers, highlighting the rewards that come from dedication and hard work. With her recent win, Coughlin has proven that she is a force to be reckoned with on the LPGA Tour and is poised for continued success in the future.
