Lynch: Valhalla is the course design that will attract architecture snobs, but we say let them go to hell!

The Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky has faced criticism from golf architecture enthusiasts who believe that championship courses should have a noble pedigree or be designed by young, vital designers. Valhalla, designed by Jack Nicklaus, does not meet these criteria and lacks associations that appeal to the cool kids of golf architecture. Located far from the ocean and lacking in natural features like sand dunes, Valhalla is seen as uninspired by design snobs.

Despite the snobbery surrounding golf course design, Valhalla has proven to be a successful venue for major championships, such as the PGA Championship. The focus on logistics, hospitality, and merchandising has overshadowed considerations of architectural merit, history, and the designer’s pulse rate. While Valhalla may not be a standout in terms of aesthetics, it has ample space for infrastructure, corporate suites, and spectator accommodations, making it a suitable venue for large events.

Valhalla’s ability to accommodate large crowds sets it apart from other venues, especially those where limited space hinders spectator enjoyment. While design snobs may critique the low scoring at Valhalla, the popularity of the venue among spectators and players indicates that it meets the demands of the golfing audience. The focus on pleasing the fans and attracting viewership often takes precedence over strict adherence to design principles that prioritize difficulty and challenge for players.

The 106th PGA Championship held at Valhalla showcased that outstanding championships and outstanding architecture are not always mutually exclusive. Despite criticism of the course’s design, the event drew in large crowds and provided thrilling competition for players and spectators. The success of the championship at Valhalla may lead to future events being held there, although the PGA of America no longer has ownership stake in the club, which could impact the decision-making process.

Ultimately, Valhalla’s role as a major championship venue proves that the demands of the golfing audience, including accessibility for spectators and the potential for exciting competition, can outweigh concerns about architectural merit. While Valhalla may not meet the standards of design purists, its success as a major championship venue highlights the importance of balancing architectural quality with the needs and expectations of players and fans.
