Professional golfer Graeme McDowell has been suspended by LIV Golf for violating its anti-doping policy, the Saudi Arabia-backed league announced. The suspension will last for one tournament and will be effective at the upcoming event in West Virginia. McDowell was found to have used a decongestant medicine that contained a banned substance, R-methamphetamine (levo-methamphetamine).
McDowell released a statement explaining that he had used a generic Vicks nasal decongestant to manage severe congestion before the LIV Nashville event in late June. He admitted that he did not realize the medicine was on the banned list and apologized for the oversight. McDowell expressed regret for not checking all medications and not applying for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) due to the over-the-counter nature of the medicine. He acknowledged the importance of following the rules and enforcement of anti-doping policies in professional golf.
LIV Golf takes a strict approach to enforcing its Anti-Doping Policy to maintain the integrity of the sport. McDowell accepted the sanctions imposed by the league, including a $125,000 fine and disqualification of his results and his team’s results from the Nashville event. Despite the challenges faced, McDowell expressed pride in his 22-year career and emphasized his focus on moving forward and returning to the golf course. He looks forward to competing in upcoming events on the LIV Golf tour.
In response to the suspension, LIV Golf shared a statement confirming McDowell’s violation of the anti-doping policy and outlining the consequences, including the one tournament suspension, fine, and disqualification of results. The league highlighted its commitment to upholding the rules and penalties to ensure fair competition. McDowell’s absence from the upcoming tournament will be filled by a reserve player, with the golfer eligible to return to competition at the LIV Golf Chicago event in September.
McDowell and his team also addressed the suspension on their Instagram account, acknowledging the positive test result from the anti-doping program during the Nashville event. They admitted to mistakenly using an over-the-counter medicated decongestant that contained a banned substance and accepted the consequences, including the suspension from the Greenbrier tournament. McDowell emphasized the importance of integrity in sports and expressed eagerness to reunite with his teammates at the LIV Golf Chicago event.
Having joined LIV Golf since its inception in 2022, Graeme McDowell has been an integral part of the tour’s lineup. Despite the setback caused by the suspension, McDowell remains committed to his career and is focused on returning to competitive golf. The incident serves as a learning experience for McDowell and highlights the importance of being vigilant about the substances consumed by professional athletes. As he looks ahead to future tournaments, McDowell aims to overcome this obstacle and continue making valuable contributions to the sport of golf.
