Marco Penge recently found himself in hot water after being sanctioned by the DP World Tour for breaching betting rules. The English golfer was fined £2,000 and banned for three months, with one of those months suspended, after it was found that he had placed bets on multiple golf events. Penge has since admitted to making an “honest mistake” and is adamant that he will never repeat this error.
In a statement posted online, Penge took full responsibility for his actions and shed light on the circumstances surrounding his bets. He revealed that 68% of his bets were placed before he took an integrity course, and the majority of them were on Major tournaments and the Ryder Cup. Penge mistakenly believed that it was acceptable to bet on golf events that he wasn’t participating in, as long as he didn’t bet on himself.
The golfer emphasized that all of his bets were positive bets, meaning he was betting on someone to win rather than lose. He claimed that his bets were purely for entertainment purposes to enhance his enjoyment of watching golf, comparing it to the experience of betting on events like the Grand National. Penge admitted that he was unaware of the DP World Tour rules regarding betting and only realized his mistake after taking a closer look at the Integrity Policy.
Penge disclosed that the average stake of his bets was around £24, and his total winnings amounted to approximately £250. Despite the relatively small amounts involved, he acknowledged that he had breached the rules and vowed not to make the same mistake again. Penge expressed remorse for his actions and assured that he had cooperated fully with the DP World Tour during the investigation process.
Looking ahead, Penge is set to return to competitive action on the DP World Tour in Kenya in February. He has learned from his misstep and is determined to move forward with a greater understanding of the rules and regulations governing betting in professional golf. Penge’s experience serves as a cautionary tale for other athletes, highlighting the importance of being aware of and adhering to the rules set forth by governing bodies to avoid costly sanctions.
