Master 3-foot putts, boost confidence, own your golf game.

As a lifestyle editor, I’ve had the privilege of exploring the many facets of golf—from the serene beauty of the course to the grit of competition. But what truly fascinates me is how moments on the green can mirror lessons for life off it. Take that ubiquitous 3-foot putt. It seems so simple, right? A mere tap-in. Yet, it’s astonishing how quickly tension, doubt, and self-sabotage can creep in, transforming a “gimme” into a mini-crisis.

I’ve witnessed this countless times, both on and off the course. That feeling of something being “yours to miss rather than make” isn’t exclusive to golf. It’s the big meeting at work, the difficult conversation with a loved one, or that passion project you’ve been putting off. The pressure builds, and suddenly, what should be effortless feels impossibly heavy. But what if we approached these moments with the same calm confidence and strategic thinking that a top golf instructor recommends?

GOLF Top 100 Teacher David Armitage has a brilliant way of reframing these short putts, and honestly, his wisdom extends far beyond the green. He believes these putts are yours before you even stroke them – it’s all about preparation and mindset. “If it’s long, it’s wrong” isn’t just about stroke length; it’s a mantra for efficiency and clarity in all aspects of life.

The Practice of Presence: Lining Up Your Life

Armitage emphasizes the importance of taking a few extra seconds to properly line up your ball. “Ninety-five percent of this putt is already done once the ball’s on the ground and it’s lined up,” he says. This isn’t just about golf; it’s about the power of intentional preparation. How often do we rush into tasks, conversations, or decisions without truly squaring ourselves up?

Whether you use the line on your golf ball or a specific habit to start your day, consistency is key. It’s about building a repeatable routine that sets you up for success. I’ve found that when I take a few quiet moments in the morning to “line up” my day – perhaps with a gratitude practice or simply organizing my thoughts – the rest of the day flows with far less friction and a lot more purpose. Just as a 3-foot putt often has “not much break,” our daily priorities often benefit from straightforward, undistracted focus. Don’t overcomplicate; just aim true.

The Art of Trust: Focusing on the “Pace” of Life

After lining up, Armitage advises a final glance at the hole, focusing purely on speed. This is where it gets really profound for me. We’re told to focus on pace, or commitment, never the endless “don’ts” that can plague our minds.

“What a lot of people are doing is they’re thinking about direction whilst they’re hitting the putt. So they’re thinking about don’t miss it left, don’t miss it right. There’s a lot of don’ts that go on.”

This resonated deeply. How many times have we approached a challenge, a new goal, or even just a busy day, with a head full of “don’ts”? Don’t mess up, don’t forget this, don’t disappoint. Instead, Armitage nudges us towards commitment and pace – a focus on the controlled energy and confident execution of the stroke, or in life, the task at hand. Once you’ve set your intentions, trust your alignment and focus on the confident flow of your actions.

Efficiency in Motion: The “Toe-to-Toe” Lifestyle

Armitage’s principle of “toe-to-toe” for your stroke – taking the putter back to your trail toe and finishing at your front toe – is brilliant in its simplicity and efficiency. “If your stroke gets long, it’s wrong,” he says. This isn’t just about golf mechanics; it’s a metaphor for living effectively.

Think about streamlining your life. Do you have routines that are too long, too drawn out, or involve unnecessary steps? I’ve noticed many of us, myself included, can overcomplicate simple tasks, leading to wasted energy and reduced effectiveness. By adopting a “toe-to-toe” approach to our responsibilities – keeping our efforts concise, purposeful, and stable – we can achieve more with less strain. This prevents “deceleration” through life’s important moments and keeps our “face” (our focus and intent) stable.

The Power of Listening: Tuning In to Success

One of my favorite pieces of advice from Armitage is about listening for the ball to go in rather than watching. This simple shift can be transformative. We often crane our necks, anticipating the outcome, only to disrupt the very motion that’s meant to achieve it. “That sound, for me, is something that I want to hear,” says Armitage, “And the key is if I don’t hear that sound, I missed it. So, I don’t need to look up to know if I missed it or holed it.”

Off the course, this translates to finishing strong and trusting the process. How often do we pull away from a task prematurely, or allow anxiety about the result to overshadow the quality of our effort? By “listening” for success – focusing on the *feeling* of completion, the *impact* of your words, or the *flow* of your work – you maintain composure and allow the natural outcome to unfold. It’s about being present through the entire action, not just its initiation.

Embracing the Expectation: The Mindset of a Champion

Finally, Armitage’s last point is perhaps the most profound for our broader lives: expect to make these putts. “Always expect to have to hole this putt,” he says. “Always look forward to holing it. Want to hole it.” This isn’t arrogance; it’s an active, positive mindset.

In life, we often shy away from “expecting” good outcomes, perhaps out of a fear of disappointment. But Armitage reminds us that expectation, coupled with preparation, is a powerful tool. It’s about facing challenges head-on, even embracing the pressure, and viewing them as opportunities rather than burdens. Whether it’s a difficult conversation, a new project, or a personal goal,

by wanting to succeed, by expecting to overcome, we build a robust confidence that colors every aspect of our lives.

So, the next time you face a 3-foot putt – or any small, high-stakes moment in your day – remember these lessons. Line up with intention, focus on your committed pace, execute with efficient grace, listen for the sound of success, and most importantly, *expect* to ace it. Because golf, at its heart, is always teaching us how to live a little better, a little more confidently, and a lot more soulfully.
