Master your lob wedge technique with this easy lesson

The lob wedge is a club that many amateur golfers fear due to its extreme loft, making it one of the more difficult clubs to hit. Even the great Lee Trevino once commented that most amateurs have no idea how to “use the damn thing.” However, understanding when and how to use the lob wedge is crucial for any golfer looking to improve their game. Luckily, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jason Birnbaum is here to offer some simple tips to help amateurs master the lob wedge.

According to Birnbaum, the lob wedge should only be used when the player is close to the green and needs to hit the ball and get it to land softly without any roll-out. Setting up properly is key to hitting a successful lob wedge shot. Birnbaum recommends a wide stance, forward ball position, and opening the clubface slightly to make a wristy shot using the back bottom part of the club, known as the bounce, to go into the turf.

Birnbaum emphasizes the importance of getting the clubface pointed towards the sky when hitting a lob wedge. Many golfers make the mistake of having the arrow on the clubface point low or to the left, resulting in shots that come out fast and roll too far. By using the correct wrist action and clubface angle, golfers can ensure the ball lands softly on the green without excessive roll-out.

As Birnbaum demonstrates a lob wedge shot, he advises players to get the back bottom of the club into the turf to help elevate the ball and land it softly onto the putting surface. While it may feel like stabbing at the ball, the high loft and open clubface of the lob wedge make it an effective tool for hitting delicate shots around the green. By following Birnbaum’s simple tips and practicing regularly, golfers can improve their confidence and skill with the lob wedge.

In addition to proper technique, having the right equipment can also make a difference in lob wedge performance. Titleist’s Vokey SM10 Raw Custom Wedge is specifically designed to maximize spin, control, and forgiveness. The club features a progressive center of gravity throughout the lofts, optimizing ball flight and accuracy, as well as Spin Milled grooves for maximum spin and durability. With the right equipment and proper technique, golfers can start using the lob wedge to their advantage and improve their short game performance.
