Ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, a series of daily articles are being launched to help golfers better understand how to use the ground to their advantage on the baked-out slopes of the course. At Pinehurst No. 2, precision is key when it comes to approaches, as missing the green can result in the ball rolling off into a collection area. It is important not to compound a tough break by following it with a low-percentage recovery shot.

In 2014, Martin Kaymer won the U.S. Open at Pinehurst by eight shots with a simple and smart strategy around the greens – putting everything possible. For golfers with an erratic chipping game, this game plan may be worth considering. To master the off-green putt, it is important to treat it like a normal putt but with a few adjustments to account for the longer distance.

For better stability, it is advised to stand slightly wider than usual. Practicing a long, flowing stroke is essential to avoid making fast, jerky strokes that could lead to mis-hits. Leaning the shaft forward slightly will help hit the ball solidly and get it rolling quicker. Reading these putts just like you would on the green, considering factors such as dew, turf firmness, contours, and grass height and grain, is crucial for success.

Before heading out to play, hitting a few practice putts off the green can help build confidence and improve overall performance. Practice is essential to instill confidence, as proven by Martin Kaymer’s success at the U.S. Open. To navigate the challenging slopes of Pinehurst No. 2, mastering the ground game and putting strategies is essential for golfers looking to succeed at the 2024 U.S. Open. By following these tips and putting in the practice, golfers can improve their game and perform at their best on this demanding course.
