The Connection Sphere, a volleyball-sized training aid, has become a popular tool among PGA Tour players to improve their arm and wrist structure during the swing. Co-invented by Golf Digest Top 50 coach Sean Foley, the sphere is designed to attach to players’ forearms and is shaped specifically to fit between their arms. Foley believes that maintaining proper arm and wrist structure is essential for optimizing performance on the course.

Foley emphasizes the importance of wrist and arm position in the backswing, noting that incorrect positioning can negatively impact the entire body’s movement and power transfer. One common mistake among amateur golfers is allowing their right arm to collapse too close to their body during the backswing, resulting in lost power and consistency. The connection sphere helps prevent this collapse by forcing players to maintain a wider arm structure throughout the swing.

By keeping the ball firmly between their arms, players are encouraged to push their arms away as one, creating a more elastic recoil in their body. This promotes a more efficient use of the body during the swing and encourages players to turn their body around the arms rather than simply lifting them. This concept has been successfully implemented by top tour players like Byeong Hun An, who has seen significant improvement in his game since working with the sphere.

Improving arm width is a key aspect of utilizing the connection sphere, as demonstrated by players like Jake Knapp and Xander Schauffele. Both players have credited the training aid with helping them enhance their arm structure and increase their clubhead speed. The increased focus on arm and wrist positioning has translated to better performance on the PGA Tour, with players like An moving up the ranks in key performance metrics such as SG: Off The Tee.

The popularity of the connection sphere among professional golfers highlights its effectiveness as a training aid for improving arm and wrist structure. Foley’s innovative design has made it easier for players to work on their swing mechanics and generate more power and consistency on the course. With the sphere’s ability to promote proper arm structure and facilitate body rotation, it has become a valuable tool for players looking to enhance their overall performance and optimize their swing mechanics. As more players adopt this training aid, we can expect to see further improvements in their game and results on the PGA Tour.
