Miakka Golf Club: A Sparkling Gem Along a Florida River with a Touch of Down Under

Miakka Golf Club, located in Myakka City, Florida, is currently under construction and boasts a lot of impressive features. The club sits on a wide-open parcel of land with two miles of frontage along a scenic river. With a former Ryder Cup captain as a consultant and a developer with deep pockets, the club is set to offer a premier private golfing experience.

One of the most unique aspects of Miakka Golf Club is its planned bunkers, inspired by the Australian Sandbelt courses. Course architects Dana Fry and Jason Straka intend to create bunkers that reach deep into the greens, with putting surfaces seemingly suspended above the sand. This style of bunkering is rarely seen in the United States and is sure to captivate golf enthusiasts.

The Melbourne Sandbelt courses, known for their exquisite bunkers, were largely designed or inspired by Alister MacKenzie. These bunkers feature graceful curves directly on the putting surfaces, creating some of the most beautiful and challenging sand traps in the world. However, due to the loose sand in most American courses, this design is not feasible without modern construction techniques.

Fry and Straka plan to use Loksand, a crimped fiber product, to construct bunker edges that can support the weight of golfers and equipment while maintaining their shape. This innovative approach will allow Miakka Golf Club to replicate the Sandbelt-style bunkers in Florida, where the native sand is typically looser.

The golf course will be part of a larger development that includes the adjacent TerraNova Equestrian Center, owned by developer Steve Herrig. Initially inspired by his daughter’s passion for horses, Herrig has created a world-class equestrian facility and plans to build a horse-themed community alongside the golf course.

With consultant Paul Azinger, a PGA Tour winner and Ryder Cup captain, providing input on the course design, Miakka Golf Club promises to offer a unique golfing experience in Florida. The property features stunning natural landscapes, including a twisting creek bed and a planned lake that will provide a scenic backdrop for the course.

In contrast to many Florida courses that rely on man-made lakes for irrigation and shotmaking interest, Miakka Golf Club will draw water from natural sources like the river and creek. The course will focus on strategic design elements rather than water hazards, similar to the style of Australian Sandbelt courses.

Overall, Miakka Golf Club aims to stand out in the competitive Florida golf market by offering a blend of luxury amenities, equestrian facilities, and world-class golf experiences. With innovative bunker design and a commitment to preserving the natural beauty of the land, the club is poised to attract discerning golfers looking for a top-tier golfing experience.
