A new housing development may be coming to the Cattails Golf Club course in Lyon Township, Detroit metro area. The township board recently approved a preliminary site plan for Cattails Cove, which will consist of 127 homes on the 160-acre golf course property. This development was approved in a 6-0 vote, with Trustee Kristofer Enlow absent. The number of homes approved is just five fewer than a previous plan that was recommended for denial by the planning commission.

The owner of Cattails Golf Club, Tony Moscone, has been paying into the sewer assessment district for the past 16 years with the anticipation of eventually being allowed to develop 127 homes on the property. Treasurer Patty Carcone noted that Moscone has upheld his end of the bargain and it is now time for the township to do the same. Trustee Sean O’Neil and Trustee Lise Blades also expressed support for the development, citing the developer’s attention to detail and commitment to working with neighbors.

The entranceway of the development has been adjusted in the plan, and lots bordering existing neighbors have been moved to address previous concerns. Developer Troutwell Limited Partnership has also met with the Road Commission for Oakland County to address any potential traffic issues. The majority of homes in the Cattails Cove development will have expansive views of wetlands, creeks, and forests, with the developers planning to preserve golf cart paths where possible.

The Cattails Golf Club, which opened in 1991 and was designed by PGA Professional John R. Williams, is known for embodying the natural beauty of the South Lyon area. This approval marks the second housing development on a Lyon Township golf course in the past year, with Settler’s Ridge previously approved for 289 homes on the Coyote Golf Club course. Coyote Golf Club was ranked among metro Detroit’s top 10 public golf courses by the Free Press in 2022.

Overall, the approval of Cattails Cove brings new opportunities for housing development in Lyon Township and showcases the natural beauty of the area. With careful attention to detail and a commitment to working with neighbors and local authorities, the developers of Cattails Cove are poised to create a stunning new community within the Detroit metro area. Residents can look forward to spacious homes with breathtaking views and access to preserved open space, making Cattails Cove a desirable place to live in Lyon Township.
