My Journeys with Ian Woosnam

Ian Woosnam, the 1991 Masters champion and former world no.1, is an avid golfer who first picked up a golf club at the age of seven in 1965. He was introduced to the game by his father, Harold, who transitioned from playing local club football to playing golf with his friends. Woosnam fondly recalls his first holiday memories at Butlins in Pwllheli in South Wales, where his family would go for boxing competitions. His dad, an amateur boxer, would compete in these competitions, and if they won, the family would get a free holiday.

When it comes to golf resorts, Woosnam has stayed at many around the world during his career, but he particularly enjoys Apes Hill Resort in Barbados, of which he is an ambassador. The resort offers a magnificent course with stunning views, top-notch facilities, and a careful development plan to ensure harmony with the local area. Woosnam’s ideal holiday fourball would include DJ Russell, Peter Baker, and Sandy Lyle for their camaraderie and friendly competition on the course.

Woosnam’s most memorable round was a 57 at Oswestry Golf Club in the middle of winter, where he shot incredibly despite missing key putts. He also recalls shooting a 60 in Monte Carlo but emphasizes that winning was always his main focus, not specific rounds. When it comes to UK courses, Woosnam used to favor the West Course at Wentworth before its redesign, appreciating its demand for versatility in shot selection.

One of Woosnam’s favorite hotels is The Lost City Hotel in Sun City, South Africa, where he has fond memories of staying during the Million Dollar Challenge in 1987. His favorite city in the world is Dublin, where the welcoming people and vibrant atmosphere always make him feel at home. Additionally, Woosnam recalls having his most memorable meal in Madrid at a restaurant called Caso Paco, where he enjoyed a perfectly cooked steak and chips.

Woosnam’s travel tip includes having a friend with a private plane to make traveling more convenient, as flying has become increasingly challenging with security measures and delays. He also suggests packing Imodium tablets and mosquito repellent for any trip, as they can be lifesaving essentials. Overall, Woosnam reflects on his golf career, personal experiences, and favorite travel memories with a mix of nostalgia and humor.
