Nelly Korda’s hopes dashed as she exits Women’s PGA Championship with an 81

The halfway stage of the Women’s PGA Championship saw Sarah Schmelzel and Amy Yang in the lead as world number one Nelly Korda suffered a tough round, missing the cut by a stroke. Korda had a disastrous second round, starting with four bogeys and only managing one birdie on the 18th. Reflecting on her performance, Korda expressed her frustration and planned to reset before her next tournament. Schmelzel and Yang both played solid rounds, with Schmelzel recording six birdies in a 67 and Yang securing a bogey-free 68 to share the lead.

Despite a rocky start, overnight leader Lexi Thompson recovered to shoot a 72, leaving her two strokes behind Schmelzel and Yang. Jin Young Ko from Korea and Hinako Shibuno from Japan also sit two strokes back alongside Thompson. Ireland’s Leona Maguire and England’s Charley Hull are part of a group three and five shots back, respectively, after their second-round performances. With the leaderboard tightly packed, the competition at the Women’s PGA Championship is heating up as players jockey for position heading into the weekend.

Schmelzel, who is still seeking her first win on the LPGA Tour after six years, expressed satisfaction with her performance and being in the mix at a major tournament. Her strong finish in the second round put her in contention for the title as the tournament reaches its climax. Yang, on the other hand, continued her consistent play with a bogey-free round, emphasizing her presence among the leaders and her chance to contend for the championship. The pressure is mounting on the top players as they vie for the prestigious title and seek to overcome challenges on the challenging course at Sahalee Country Club.

Korda’s struggles in the second round marked a sharp contrast to her recent dominant form, where she won six out of seven starts prior to the US Open. Her unexpected early exit from the tournament underscores the competitive nature of professional golf and the unpredictable nature of the sport. As Korda regroups and reflects on her performance, she will look to bounce back stronger in future events. The Women’s PGA Championship has seen its fair share of surprises and upsets, adding to the drama and excitement that fans and players alike have come to expect from major championships.

With the tournament approaching the final two rounds, the pressure will only intensify for the players at the top of the leaderboard. As Schmelzel, Yang, Thompson, and the rest of the contenders battle it out for the championship, every shot will count as they navigate the challenging course and difficult conditions. The Women’s PGA Championship promises to deliver thrilling moments and highlight the talent and skill of the world’s best female golfers as they compete for one of the most prestigious titles in women’s golf. Stay tuned to see who will emerge victorious and etch their name in history at the Sahalee Country Club.
