Review of the Nikon COOLSHOT 50i II Rangefinder: Your New Best Friend on the Course

Quick Overview of the Nikon COOLSHOT 50i II

Let’s kick things off! The Nikon COOLSHOT 50i II is not just any rangefinder. It’s packed with all the bells and whistles you’d want: slope measurement, pin recognition, and even a handy scanning mode. Plus, it’s got a super strong magnet for easy attachment to your golf cart. All of this solid construction comes with an impressive warranty. Sounds like a winner, right?

First Impressions

So here’s the deal: I’ve been using Nikon’s COOLSHOT rangefinder series for years now, and when I got my hands on the 50i II, I was stoked! While it’s the second generation, this unit feels completely fresh. If you’re in the dark about the COOLSHOT PROIII STABILIZED, don’t fret; I’ve got that covered too. Both rangefinders share many of the same cool features, but the 50i II throws in that slick built-in magnet to keep it secure on your cart. Sweet!

Getting Started: Setup & Ease of Use

Let’s talk setup. The 50i II comes in a pretty standard box, and it includes a case, a CR2 battery, and a Quick Start Guide. Easy peasy! Installing the battery is a breeze—just pop it in and you’re good to go. The default settings are comfortably set for most golfers, allowing you to measure distances with a quick press of the power button. Who doesn’t love simple?

But I gotta be honest, changing the settings isn’t super intuitive. If you start fumbling around, I’d recommend downloading the Instruction Manual from Nikon’s website. It’ll save you some headache! Just a heads up, I’ll give you a quick rundown of the basics so you don’t have to scramble.

Navigating the 50i II’s Features

Pressing the MODE button gives you the option to switch between Golf Mode (with slope adjustment) and Actual Distance Mode (for those tournament rounds). If you go the actual distance route, a flashing green light informs everyone that slope readings are off. Pretty neat, right?

To bring up display options, you just need to hold down the MODE button. You’ll see two additional modes. The first lets you adjust the screen brightness from 1 to 5, and I’ve got to say, I love the red graphics at the brightest setting. It’s like having your own personal golf tech setup!

The second additional mode switches between yards and meters, which is super handy if you’re playing on different courses.

Accuracy: Nail Those Distances

Now onto the important stuff: accuracy. As expected from a Nikom laser rangefinder, the COOLSHOT 50i II really delivers. You won’t see more than a yard of difference when you compare it to other high-end models. The speed is decent, and while it’s not as fast as the PROIII’s cutting-edge HYPER READ technology, it does the job. Plus, it can measure up to 1200 yards—plenty for most golfers!

Exciting Features that Bring It Home

What else does the 50i II bring to the table? First off, there’s the DUAL LOCKED ON QUAKE feature—this nifty addition confirms when you’ve got the flagstick in your sights with a little buzz and a red outline. It’s perfect for those times when the background gets busy, and you’re unsure if you’ve locked onto the target.

Then there’s the First Target Priority feature for you distance warriors out there. It focuses on the nearest object, so you won’t mistakenly lock onto that distant tree. Scanning is another fan-favorite feature; just hold down the power button and get quick distance readings for up to eight seconds. This is especially helpful for those tricky holes.

Discussing the Built-in Magnet

I can’t help but rave about the built-in magnet. As a golf cart junkie, this feature is a game-changer. You can securely attach your rangefinder right where you need it! I love that my rangefinder won’t go flying off when the cart hits a bump. Just a heads-up: the PROIII doesn’t have this magnet feature, as it interferes with the stabilization tech, but hey, for this model, it’s a win.

Price Point and Value

Okay, let’s talk about money. The Nikon COOLSHOT 50i II retails for around $300—a solid $200 less than its flagship cousin, the PROIII STABILIZED. Sure, the PROIII has some premium features like stabilization, but that price difference makes the 50i II a fantastic option for the average golfer. Trust me when I say you’ll get quality at this price point.

You’re also getting a 5-year warranty, which is double what some competitors offer. That kind of longevity means you can confidently invest in the 50i II!

Conclusion: Is It Worth It?

To wrap it all up, the Nikon COOLSHOT 50i II is an awesome laser rangefinder. With clear optics and a user-friendly interface, you’ll be reading distances in no time. It feels robust, and that magnet? Pure genius—it keeps your gear right where you need it.

While I personally can’t live without the stabilization from the PROIII, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the 50i II to recreational golfers. Just make sure to understand how to turn off the slope feature easily; you wouldn’t want to accidentally get disqualified for a competitive misstep!

So if you’re on the hunt for a reliable rangefinder, definitely check out the Nikon COOLSHOT 50i II. Your golf game might just thank you!
