The Future of the PGA Tour: The Sentry Tournament’s Uncertain Status in 2026

In a notable shake-up for the PGA Tour, the iconic season opener, The Sentry, will not take place at the Plantation Course in Kapalua in 2026. This disruption stems not from ordinary scheduling conflicts or sponsorship hiccups, but from a high-profile dispute involving two billionaires, Tadashi Yanai and Steve Case, centered around access to water rights.

The Water Rights Dispute

Tadashi Yanai, the founder of Uniqlo and Japan’s second-richest individual, is locked in a conflict with Steve Case, co-founder of AOL and the majority owner of Maui Land & Pineapple. Yanai’s TY Management Corporation owns the Kapalua Resort, while Case’s MLP controls the crucial water supply through the historic Honokohau Ditch system, which was originally built by missionaries over a century ago for pineapple plantations. This system, however, has reportedly faced damage from storms dating back to 2018.

Community Implications

This dispute is far-reaching, impacting not just the billionaires but also local farmers, particularly Native Hawaiians who cultivate kalo (taro). In June 2024, a ruling by the Hawaii Supreme Court emphasized that golf courses should receive significantly less water than what’s customary in Hawaiian culture.

Isaac Moriwake, an attorney with Earthjustice, underscored the importance of this decision, stating that it reinforces water rights legal principles, particularly regarding Hawaii’s protection of cultural practices.

Legal Proceedings and Future Uncertainty

The legal battle is poised to extend for several years, with key trial dates set for March 2027. Mark Rolfing, the architect behind the original 1987 water deal, believes that financial power will dictate the outcome of this litigation, declaring, “I know who’s got the most money, and it’s not Maui Land & Pine.”

Alex Nakajima, the general manager of Kapalua Golf, indicated that the lengthy timeline creates significant uncertainty for tournament planning, as it could take several years to resolve the underlying infrastructure issues.

Recent Developments

The dispute escalated in August 2025 when TY Management, alongside local farmers and homeowners, filed a negligence lawsuit against MLP. Following the devastating Lahaina fires in 2023, Hawaii’s Water Services Commission implemented stringent Tier 4 water restrictions, severely limiting water usage for non-essential purposes, which directly influenced golf courses’ conditions.

In September, PGA Tour agronomists found the condition of the Kapalua courses unfit for play, prompting the cancellation of The Sentry for 2026 due to failure to meet Tour-standard playing conditions.

Player Reactions

In January 2026, CBS golf writer Patrick McDonald pointed out the pristine condition of the Kapalua course, leading to frustration and discussion among fans about the abrupt cancellation.

Sony Open Takes Center Stage

With The Sentry off the 2026 schedule, the PGA Tour’s opening event will now be the Sony Open, held from January 15 to 18, 2026, at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. This tournament, which has been celebrated since 1965, will kick off the Tour’s regular season, maintaining Hawaii’s tradition of hosting early-year events.

Significance of the Sony Open

The Sony Open will feature 120 professional players, including top-ranked competitors, and have critical implications for FedExCup points. Its new status as the first official event of the year emphasizes its growing importance amidst The Sentry’s absence.

The challenges affecting Kapalua could have far-reaching implications across the PGA Tour’s scheduling in Hawaii. Ongoing water rights disputes and infrastructure issues could force organizers to reconsider the Tour’s early-season presence in the islands.

Conclusion

As the PGA Tour navigates these turbulent waters, the future of events in Hawaii remains uncertain. The situation underscores a wider narrative of balancing tradition with cultural responsibilities and long-term sustainability. The world of professional golf will keenly watch as this unique saga unfolds.
