Improve Your Golf Game: The Driver Drill for Center-Face Strikes

In the world of professional golf, perfecting your driver technique is crucial for maximizing distance and accuracy. We’ve all heard the advice: "Hit up on the ball with the driver." While this can be beneficial, it doesn’t work for everyone. Excessive loft at impact can lead to higher spin rates and lower contact on the clubface, costing you crucial yards.

A Simple Drill for Better Impact

To refine your approach, consider trying this effective drill:

  1. Setup: Tee up your ball as usual.
  2. Add Tees: Position two additional tees directly in front of the ball, aligned with your target line.
  3. Objective: The goal is to hit through the ball while also striking the two front tees.

If you tend to hit too much "up" on your shots, this setup will help you recognize your swing tendencies. Missing the forward tee is a sign that your angle of attack needs adjustment.

Benefits of the Drill

  • Lower Launch Angle: By visualizing the two tees, you can keep your driver lower through impact, promoting a more favorable swing path.
  • Reduced Loft: Properly utilizing this technique will help de-loft the club, allowing for straighter and longer shots.
  • Improved Contact: Striking the ball more consistently in the center of the clubface is essential for effective shots and increased distance.

This drill is recommended by Bernie Najar, Director of Instruction at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.
