The heat of summer presents challenges to golfers as they strive to manage their physical well-being on the course. Overheating and dehydration can lead to muscle cramping, stiffness, and decreased performance. Hans Larsson, a swing coach, emphasizes the importance of staying cool to avoid these issues. In addition to staying hydrated and snacking, the clothing you wear can significantly impact your body temperature. The color of your clothing, in particular, can influence how much heat your body absorbs.

Toshiaki Ichinose, an executive senior research scientist in Japan, conducted an experiment to study the relationship between clothing color and heat absorption. By placing different-colored polo shirts in the sun and measuring their surface temperatures, Ichinose and his team discovered that the color of clothing can affect how much radiant energy is absorbed. White shirts were found to be the coolest, while black shirts absorbed the most heat. This information can help golfers choose appropriate clothing items for hot days on the course.

Among the colors tested, white was the coolest color, absorbing the least amount of light and heat. Yellow followed closely behind, with light gray taking third place. Red and purple also performed well in terms of heat absorption. Surprisingly, green absorbed more infrared light than black, making it one of the hottest colors to wear on a sunny day. Dark green and navy blue ranked lower on the list, while black was found to be the color that absorbed the most heat overall.

When choosing your golf attire for hot summer days, consider the color of your clothing to help regulate your body temperature. Opting for lighter colors such as white, yellow, or light gray can help keep you cooler on the course. Colors like red and purple also performed well in the study, providing a balance between style and heat management. Avoid darker colors like black and dark green, as they tend to absorb more heat and can lead to discomfort during your round of golf.

By being mindful of the colors you wear on the golf course, you can improve your performance and stay comfortable in the summer heat. Incorporating this knowledge into your golf wardrobe can make a difference in your overall experience and enjoyment of the game. Remember to stay hydrated, snack frequently, and choose clothing items that will help you stay cool and focused on your game. With the right attire and preparation, you can tackle the dog days of summer with confidence and ease on the golf course.
