Hitting successful bunker shots in golf can be a challenging task for many players, especially those with high handicaps, due to the unique demands of the technique involved. Factors such as the density and amount of sand in the bunker, the height of the lip, and the point at which the club enters the sand can all cause confusion and frustration for golfers. Getting the strike right is crucial, especially if you are using the wrong wedge setup. A poor short game can greatly impact your overall performance on the course, making it essential to master bunker shots.

Ping has recently released a new BunkR wedge that aims to help golfers improve their bunker play. The BunkR wedge is designed to mimic the footprint of the forgiving Ping Eye2 wedge and is meant to be played with a square face, eliminating the need for manipulation and enhancing consistency in setup. While the design may not be as visually appealing as other top-end wedges on the market, the focus is on function over form, with the wide sole of the BunkR wedge offering 14.5° of bounce for optimal launch and smooth sand interaction.

Players who are accustomed to opening the face of their lob wedge at address may find it challenging to adjust to the square face of the BunkR wedge initially. However, once they get used to the setup, hitting bunker shots with the BunkR wedge feels effortless. The wedge’s 64° of loft and 14.5° of bounce provide an ideal combination for achieving a clean strike and generating spin on the ball for precise control around the green.

The soft feel and spin generated off the face of the Ping BunkR wedge contribute to a pleasing overall experience for players. The wedge’s design simplifies the process of escaping bunkers by allowing golfers to stand square to their target and make consistent swings. While the excessive bounce of the wedge may cause some issues in certain bunker conditions, adjustments can be made to adapt to different situations and ensure effective shot execution.

Despite being priced at $195, the Ping BunkR wedge offers a valuable solution for golfers struggling with their short game. The club’s ease of use and versatility make it a worthwhile investment for those looking to improve their bunker play and overall performance on the course. By simplifying the process of hitting bunker shots and providing consistent results, the BunkR wedge can help golfers overcome short game woes and enhance their overall experience on the golf course.
