PXG Hellcat ZT Putter Review: Is It the Best Bang for Your Buck?

Alright, golf lovers! Today, we’re diving into the world of putters, specifically the PXG Hellcat ZT. This bad boy is the third installment in PXG’s zero torque line, following the Allan and Bat Attack ZT models. Priced at $249 (or £239), it’s a little easier on the wallet than its predecessors. But the big question is: does it perform as well as the more expensive options? I took it out for a spin to find out—let’s get into it!

The Aesthetics: A Mixed Bag

First off, let’s talk design. The Hellcat ZT boasts a larger blade design, which gives it a clean and straightforward look behind the ball. I appreciate PXG finally dropping a blade model in the zero torque family—it feels like a step in the right direction. However, I’ve got to say, the chrome contrast on the sole just doesn’t sit right with me. It looks a bit cheap next to the sleek matte finishes of the Allan and Bat Attack ZT. Maybe it’s just me, but I think they could’ve done better here.

The S-Hosel Design

Now, heading into the techy bits, the Hellcat ZT keeps the S-hosel design that made the Allan putter a hit. This design is pretty nifty as it helps eliminate torque while not blocking your view of the sightline. For me, seeing that line is super important for putting, so big thumbs up here! Plus, it comes with a 1° forward shaft lean, making the 4° loft play nice and low at 3°. Nice!

Short Range vs. Long Range: Performance Review

Let’s be honest here. The Hellcat ZT impressed me from inside 15 feet. The feel was great, and I felt pretty confident making those shorter putts. However, as the distance stretched past 30 feet, things got a tad rocky. The putter felt a bit too firm, and the acoustics? High-pitched and reminiscent of the classic Ping Anser, not exactly what you want to hear as you sink a crucial putt.

Stability Issues

The bigger issue I encountered was stability. When I hit a miss-stroke, well, let’s just say the ball didn’t go where I wanted it to. I found myself struggling to make par from five-footers because the putts would fall horribly short of the target. So if you’re looking for something that keeps you steady from all distances, you might want to keep shopping.

Grip Game Strong

Also, the grip on the Hellcat ZT is pretty unique—the box-style isn’t what everyone is used to, but once you get a handle on it, it does keep your hands and wrists nice and still. I mean, if you get stressed over those shorter putts, this grip might be your new best friend. It encourages you to aim and just rock your shoulders—no unnecessary wrist action.

Finding Precision

The good news? While the putter may struggle with stability, it does excel in precision. If long-range putting isn’t your thing but you’re confident in getting up close and personal, this could be your secret weapon. Just keep in mind, you’ll have to dial in your distance control to get the best out of it.

Value for Your Buck

At the end of the day, the PXG Hellcat ZT holds its own among the best zero torque putters out there. It’s a solid option for those who love a blade-style feel while appreciating the perks of zero torque. It might not be the most straightforward putter when it comes to stability, but for precision putting (especially within that five-foot range), it can shine.

Why You Should Consider It

If you find yourself in the market for a putter that won’t break the bank but still offers cutting-edge design and solid performance, give the Hellcat ZT a look. Sure, it’s got its quirks, but if you’re someone who struggles with the yips on close putts, this might just be the answer to your prayers.

Final Thoughts

In summary, the PXG Hellcat ZT is a great option, especially for those wanting a zero torque putter that resembles a blade at address. It may not win any stability awards, but it gets high marks for precision and feel. So this summer, if sinking those tricky putts is on your to-do list, the Hellcat ZT deserves a spot on your shopping list!

So there you have it! Whether you’re a seasoned player or just getting the hang of things, I’d say this putter deserves a shot. Happy putting!
