Rickie Fowler Responds to Blades Brown’s Remarkable PGA Tour Round at Just 18 Years Old

Rising Star Blades Brown Impresses at the American Express

Blades Brown, an 18-year-old prodigy, has taken the golfing world by storm at the American Express, showcasing his immense talent and potential. After making headlines during his participation in the Korn Ferry Tour, the official developmental tour of the PGA Tour, Brown made a remarkable leap to PGA West, where he not only participated but performed exceptionally well.

In the second round, Brown delivered an astonishing score of 60, placing him in fierce competition with world number one Scottie Scheffler at the top of the leaderboard. Are we witnessing the emergence of golf’s next big sensation?

A Parallel to Rickie Fowler’s Journey

Rickie Fowler, a name synonymous with rising stars in golf, had a similar trajectory. As a 19-year-old in 2008, he began his US Open campaign with an impressive one-under-par score, which tied him for seventh place. Fowler’s own journey serves as a poignant reminder of the potential game-changers like Brown offer the sport.

Following his second round, Fowler shared his thoughts on Brown’s impressive score.

Rickie Fowler Offers Insights for Success on the PGA Tour

When asked about Brown’s performance, Fowler acknowledged his considerable talent and offered encouraging advice:

“I’ve been around him a little bit. Haven’t played with him yet. Obviously, he’s a great player. Soak it up, have fun. It goes by pretty quickly. This is my 17th year on Tour. Good to see him playing well; that’s really what it’s all about.”

Fowler emphasized the competitive landscape is shifting younger, and he reflected on how the average age of players on Tour has decreased throughout his career:

“This game’s not getting any older… Looking at when I came out, the average age on Tour has changed. I felt like as I went into my prime, the average age kept shifting.”

Fowler believes that as young talent emerges, the age for serious competition will continue to drop:

“I think 17, 18 is becoming a reality for competitive play on the PGA Tour. There are kids as young as 15 and 16 who can compete effectively.”

Rickie Fowler’s Performance at the American Express

Fowler’s performance has also turned a corner after a challenging 2025 season plagued by injury. In 2026, he has bounced back with determination. After a stellar second-round score of 63 on the Nicklaus Course, Fowler stands at 14-under, positioning him T6, just three shots behind Brown and Scheffler.

With the tournament cut following Saturday’s play on all three courses, Fowler faces the challenging Stadium Course next. If he navigates this daunting task successfully, he may very well secure a competitive standing heading into the final rounds, an encouraging sign as the new season unfolds.
