Rory McIlroy’s Long Distances at High Altitudes are Unbelievable

The BMW Championship is currently underway at Castle Pines Golf Club in Colorado, a course located at a high altitude of around 6,200 feet above sea level. This altitude allows PGA Tour pros to experience significant yardage gains, with players like Rory McIlroy showcasing some impressive numbers. McIlroy, known for his distance off the tee, is averaging 319 yards this season. However, at Castle Pines, he can carry his driver up to a whopping 346 yards, with some reports suggesting that he may have hit a 371-yard drive during practice. Additionally, McIlroy’s 3-wood can carry 322 yards and his 5-wood can fly up to 300 yards. These long distances are a result of the thinner air and higher elevation.

In addition to his impressive driving distance, McIlroy’s long irons are also showing significant gains at altitude. His 5-iron can carry nearly 250 yards, while his 8-iron and 9-iron can reach 205 and 185 yards respectively. These exceptional distances will be valuable assets for McIlroy as he competes in the BMW Championship, where FedEx Cup points are up for grabs. The tournament is also an opportunity for players to potentially break long driving records, with Max Homa currently holding the record for the longest drive in PGA Tour history at 477 yards. While reaching that distance may be a stretch, hitting over 455 yards could land a player in the top 10 record books.

TaylorMade Golf released a video showcasing McIlroy’s impressive yardages at altitude, highlighting the advantage that the thin air provides for long hitters like McIlroy. This altitude-induced power has the potential to change the dynamics of the game, allowing players to reach distances that may not be achievable at lower altitudes. The ability to hit longer shots can give players a significant edge on the course, especially on a lengthy layout like Castle Pines Golf Club. As such, mastering the altitude conditions and adjusting their game accordingly will be crucial for players competing in the BMW Championship.

The gains seen in distance at altitude are not limited to McIlroy alone, with other players also experiencing significant boosts in their yardages. The combination of high altitude, thinner air, and favorable playing conditions at Castle Pines Golf Club presents a unique opportunity for players to unleash their full potential and push the boundaries of what is possible in terms of driving distance. As the tournament progresses, spectators can expect to witness some remarkable shots and potential record-breaking drives on the course. The BMW Championship promises to be an exciting event filled with awe-inspiring displays of power and skill from the world’s top golfers.
