Machrihanish Dunes, located on the Kintyre Peninsula in western Scotland, has recently announced plans to expand its offerings with a second 18-hole course. The resort, owned by Boston-based golf developer Southworth, is following a trend set by other successful golf destinations, such as Bandon Dunes in Oregon, in creating multiple courses to attract golfers from around the world. This expansion comes as a response to the growing demand for high-quality golf experiences in unique and natural settings.

The original Machrihanish Dunes course, designed by David McLay Kidd, has been widely praised for its natural layout and environmental sensitivity. The new course will continue in this tradition, with plans to incorporate sustainable practices and blend seamlessly with the existing landscape. Additionally, the expansion will include new hotel rooms, cottages, a clubhouse, and a practice facility to enhance the overall guest experience at the resort.

The Kintyre Peninsula is already known for its spectacular links courses, including the Machrihanish Golf Club, designed by Old Tom Morris and ranked 97th on GOLF’s list of Top 100 Courses in the World. With the addition of a second course at Machrihanish Dunes, golfers will have even more reason to visit this picturesque corner of Scotland and enjoy a variety of golfing experiences. The new course will offer elevated views and a traditional seaside links layout, providing a unique and challenging playing experience for golfers of all levels.

Although an architect has not yet been selected for the new course, construction is expected to begin in 2025, with completion slated for the near future. The goal of the expansion is to enhance the resort’s appeal to golfers and visitors alike, while preserving the natural beauty and environmental integrity of the land. By expanding their offerings and investing in sustainable practices, Machrihanish Dunes aims to become a premier golf destination in Scotland and attract golf enthusiasts from around the world.

Southworth President Tommy Southworth expressed excitement about the expansion plans, noting the unique and special nature of the land on which Machrihanish Dunes is situated. He emphasized the importance of expanding offerings for all types of visitors while maintaining respect for the natural landscape and eco-system. The new course will add to the resort’s portfolio of golf and leisure amenities, providing guests with a comprehensive and memorable experience in one of Scotland’s most beautiful regions.

For golf enthusiasts looking for a truly unique and natural golf experience, Machrihanish Dunes is set to become a must-visit destination in Scotland. With its stunning coastal location, environmentally sensitive design, and world-class golf offerings, the resort is poised to attract golfers from near and far. The expansion plans, including the addition of a second course, highlight the resort’s commitment to providing exceptional golf experiences in a sustainable and responsible manner, ensuring that future generations can enjoy this special piece of land for years to come.
