Steve Young considers switching to left-handed golf play

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion, Steve Young, has recently taken up golf and is working to improve his game. Young admits that growing up, he did not have much experience playing golf, and when he did play, he used right-handed clubs despite being left-handed. This fundamental flaw in his game has led him to seek help and make improvements to his swing. Young has turned to former Tour player Keith Clearwater for guidance and also received tips from golf legends like Annika Sorenstam and Peter Jacobsen.

Despite facing high levels of stress on the football field, playing golf in front of a crowd brings a different kind of pressure for Young. He explains that the key to managing stress in golf is the competitive experience gained from playing as a kid. Young compares learning golf later in life to learning a language with an accent, emphasizing the importance of starting young. Even former NFL greats like Jerry Rice have recognized the challenges of attempting to go pro in golf later in life.

While Young has yet to play at Augusta, he expresses a desire to do so in the future. He acknowledges the pressure to perform well in celebrity events and jokes about competing against fellow celebrities like Larry the Cable Guy. Young even considers playing with both right-handed and left-handed clubs as a potential advantage, suggesting a unique approach to the game. He entertains the idea of challenging other former NFL quarterbacks, like Tony Romo, in a mixed club format.

As Steve Young continues to work on his golf game, he remains focused on improving his skills and enjoying the game. Despite the challenges he faces as a newcomer to the sport, Young is determined to make progress and potentially compete at higher levels in the future. With the support and guidance of experienced players like Keith Clearwater and Annika Sorenstam, Young is committed to honing his swing and mastering the intricacies of golf. As he navigates the complexities of the game, Young’s passion for golf shines through, showcasing his dedication to continuous improvement and embracing new challenges.
