Rediscovering Golf: The Timeless Charm of Hickory Clubs

Golf has always been a sport steeped in tradition, yet it continues to evolve with new technology and equipment. As a passionate golfer, my journey has often led me to seek the latest in golfing gear. Growing up, I was enamored with my father’s hand-me-down clubs, fostering a persistent case of "club envy." However, my outlook shifted upon hearing professional golfer Rory McIlroy praise the TaylorMade M2 driver from 2016 as his all-time favorite. It was a revelation that prompted me to consider whether new equipment truly delivers superior performance.

The conversation with Rory sparked an epiphany: perhaps the relentless pursuit of the newest equipment isn’t the goal after all. Inspired, I found myself browsing eBay for used clubs, only to stumble upon the intriguing world of Hickory golf—a throwback to a time when players relied on wooden clubs. This revelation connected me to a passion for the game that I thought had faded.

A Chance Encounter with Hickory Golf

At the 2025 PGA Show, I had the opportunity to meet Tad Moore, a renowned golf club designer and master putter craftsman. During our conversation, Moore shared his passion for Hickory golf, a niche interest involving the use of wooden clubs that date back before 1935. Surprisingly, this traditional golf format has amassed a dedicated global following, with players dressing in classic attire for tournaments across countries like China, Japan, and various European nations. Organizations such as the Society of Hickory Golfers (SoHG) and the European Association of Hickory Golfers (EAGH) maintain strict equipment regulations that emphasize authenticity.

For those unfamiliar, Hickory golf clubs are crafted from American Hickory wood, often constructed using traditional manufacturing techniques. The fact that thousands of players still participate in Hickory tournaments every year proves that this type of golf holds a special nostalgic charm.

The History of Hickory Golf

Tad’s journey began in the early 1980s when he fell in love with collecting antique golf clubs. Along with a group of enthusiasts, he began to play with these vintage clubs, deeply appreciating the historic and charming aspects of the traditional game. Moore faced significant challenges in finding old Hickory clubs that were playable and affordable, but a pivotal moment came during a trip to Scotland. There, he discovered a vintage Niblick club made by William Gibson—an iconic figure in the world of golf. After contemplating the $400 price tag, a friend’s comment encouraged him to pursue club-making for Hickory golf seriously.

In 2002, Moore revitalized Hickory club-making in the U.S. for the first time since 1932, setting out to create authentic replicas of these cherished clubs. His dedication to quality craftsmanship has made him a respected figure in the growing Hickory golf community, with players seeking durable yet traditional equipment.

The Rise of Hickory Golf

A significant aspect of Hickory golf is its revival in various countries, such as Korea. Upon returning home after meeting Tad Moore, I was curious about establishing connections with Hickory golfers in Korea. To my delight, I discovered that the Korea Hickory Golfing Society (KHGS) has been active since 2024, competing in international Hickory championships and actively welcoming newcomers.

When I reached out to the KHGS, I was quickly invited to participate in their monthly Hickory golf outing—a thrilling opportunity to experience Hickory golf firsthand. Eagerly, I prepared myself for this unique event, hoping to connect with fellow golfers who share this passion.

Playing with Hickory Clubs

On the day of my outing, I was warmly welcomed by the president and members of the KHGS. Fellow golfers showcased a fascinating collection of Hickory clubs and gear, ranging from replicas of Tom Stewart irons to authentic putters. I was fortunate enough to play with a fresh set of Tad Moore Victory irons and a beautiful, vintage driver and putter over a century old, on loan from the chairman.

Before the round, I had only practiced with Hickory clubs for a couple of weeks on simulators. The moment I struck the ball, the feeling was exquisite, especially with the irons. Despite the smaller-sized 3-wood (known as a "spoon"), I felt that I could adapt quickly. On the course, the clubs felt more comfortable than I had anticipated, allowing me to experience the delightful, engaging nature of the game.

A Return to the Roots of Golf

As the round progressed, I discovered that using only five Hickory irons—comparable to modern 5, 7, 9, AW, and SW—required me to be more creative in strategizing my shots. Without the standard arsenal of clubs, I found joy in experimenting with distance control and shot selection. My smooth swing style worked well with the Hickory clubs, and the connection to more traditional methods revitalized my appreciation for the nuanced skill golf demands.

One of the most captivating moments came on the back nine when I gazed at the ancient putter. It evoked a sense of nostalgia and warmth that contemporary clubs have failed to elicit. This connection to the past was profound, making me wonder if this is how early golfers experienced their love for the game.

The Transformation of a Golfer

So, did Hickory golf eliminate my obsession with acquiring new clubs? The answer is a complex "yes and no." While I gained insight into the joy of playing the game for its own sake, I also felt an awakening of my interest in Hickory clubs and their rich history. My quest now includes searching for a driver and putter to complete my own Hickory set, along with a vintage golf bag to accentuate my experience.

Part of me fears that this newfound obsession may lead me to more purchases, but it also signifies a deeper understanding of what golf symbolizes. Thanks to Tad Moore and this enriching experience, I’ve rekindled my appreciation for the game and what it means to truly enjoy golf.

Embracing the Challenge of Hickory Golf

If you ever have the chance to engage in Hickory golf, I highly recommend it. It can offer a refreshing perspective to any golfer who may have lost touch with the game’s essence. Even a round with a limited selection of clubs can provide a unique challenge, helping you rediscover what makes golf so special.

Finding yourself dressed in period attire, surrounded by the sound of clubs striking the ball amidst the backdrop of stunning landscapes, could reignite your passion for golf. You might find that stepping away from the latest technology opens the door to experiencing the game’s authentic beauty.

A New Chapter in Golf

In conclusion, the allure of Hickory golf is more than just nostalgia; it’s a journey of understanding the rich history and artistry behind the game. As I continue to delve into Hickory golf, I’m reminded of the simplicity and joy that first drew me to the sport. The quest now isn’t just about purchasing the latest clubs, but about honoring a tradition that encapsulates the spirit of golf.

Who knows? Perhaps one day, we’ll meet on a historic Scottish course, clad in period-appropriate attire, appreciating the timeless connection between golf and its beautifully crafted equipment. Until then, I embrace this invigorating chapter in my golf journey with open arms. The wind, the turf, and the unforgettable feel of a hickory shaft will guide me back to the purest format of the game.
