Spain’s pursuit of hosting the Ryder Cup has been a dream long in the making, with plans dating back to over a decade ago. The country has a rich history of golf and has been a pivotal part of the Ryder Cup’s history, with Spain hosting the event in 1997. A decade ago, Spain threw its hat in the ring to host the 2022 Ryder Cup, but ultimately lost the bid to Italy. However, Spain did not give up on its dream of hosting the prestigious event.

Hosting a Ryder Cup requires a significant amount of resources, including a suitable golf course capable of accommodating large crowds, as well as government backing and funding. Spain has been actively pursuing the opportunity to host the 2031 Ryder Cup, with plans to host the event in the Catalonia region, specifically at the Camiral Golf and Wellness resort. However, the initial plans faced a setback when the Catalan government rejected the proposal for a new golf course at the resort.

Despite the setback, there is renewed hope for Spain’s bid to host the 2031 Ryder Cup. The Catalan Minister of Sports, Berni Alvarez, has expressed optimism that hosting the event is still a viable option for Spain. The government is currently negotiating budgets and finalizing contracts, with plans to announce the hosting of the Ryder Cup in the coming months. The latest report suggests that the event may take place at a composite course of the two tracks at the Camiral resort.

Spain faces competition from England in its bid to host the 2031 Ryder Cup, with multiple groups in England vying for the hosting rights. Potential host sites in England include The London Club in the greater London area, Luton Hoo just north of London, and Hulton Park northwest of Manchester. Each site has its own plans for hosting the event, with support from government and local ambassadors like Tommy Fleetwood. The decision on the host site will be made by Ryder Cup Europe and the DP World Tour, with Spain and England being the primary contenders.

While Spain’s pursuit of hosting the Ryder Cup has faced challenges, the country remains determined to bring the event to its shores. The announcement of the hosting rights for the 2031 Ryder Cup is eagerly awaited, with Spain hoping to fulfill its dream of hosting the prestigious event. The competition from England adds another layer of excitement to the bidding process, with both countries showcasing their readiness and enthusiasm to host the Ryder Cup. Only time will tell which country will emerge victorious in securing the hosting rights for the 2031 Ryder Cup.
