Sheep Ranch Golf Course in Bandon Dunes is a renowned course that has had an interesting history. Originally built in the early 2000s as a 13-hole course with no irrigation by Tom Doak, the course was a hidden gem known only to a select few. However, it was later transformed into a regulation 18-hole course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, making it the fifth course at the Bandon Dunes resort and the second designed by Coore and Crenshaw. Spread across a windswept plateau overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Sheep Ranch is known for its wide fairways and large putting surfaces, making it playable even in extreme wind conditions.

One of the key features of Sheep Ranch is its location along the Pacific Ocean, with nine holes touching the cliff edge. This unique layout provides stunning views and a challenging playing experience for golfers of all skill levels. Despite its exposed location, the course has gained recognition as one of the top public courses in the country, ranking in the top 15 alongside Bandon Dunes’ other courses. This distinction sets Sheep Ranch apart from other resort courses and cements its reputation as a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts.

In addition to its scenic beauty and challenging layout, Sheep Ranch is known for its strategic design elements. Coore and Crenshaw managed to create a course that is both playable and challenging, with multiple tee options to cater to different skill levels. The course’s fast greens and undulating fairways provide a true test of golfing skill, requiring players to think strategically and use every club in their bag.

Another standout feature of Sheep Ranch is its commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation. The course’s design takes into account the natural landscape and ecosystem, utilizing native vegetation and minimal irrigation to create a course that is both environmentally friendly and visually stunning. This dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the area sets Sheep Ranch apart from other golf courses and reinforces its reputation as a world-class destination for golfers.

Sheep Ranch’s popularity has continued to grow in recent years, attracting golfers from around the world who are drawn to its unique charm and challenging layout. The course’s reputation as a top public course has only further boosted its appeal, with golfers eager to experience the thrill of playing alongside the rugged coastline and enjoying the breathtaking views. With its distinctive design, strategic layout, and commitment to sustainability, Sheep Ranch has established itself as a premier golf destination that is sure to delight players of all ages and skill levels.
