Golf course superintendents have a challenging job that often goes unrecognized, leading to high stress levels and even mental health crises. Shannon Wheeler, director of agronomy at The Plantation, faced his own family crisis when his daughter, Mallory, struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts. After receiving treatment for anxiety and depression, Mallory was diagnosed with social communication disorder and began working with a service dog to help with her symptoms. The cost of obtaining the service dog was high, but through fundraising efforts with the support of the club membership, Mallory was able to bring home Harlow, the Golden Retriever puppy trained as a service dog.

Mallory’s life was transformed by Harlow, who provided her with comfort, confidence, and crucial support, especially in social situations. The club membership rallied together to raise funds for Harlow, surpassing the original goal and allowing Mallory to continue benefiting from the service dog’s assistance. Members of the club were eager to support Mallory and Harlow, demonstrating a strong sense of community and compassion. Mallory’s success with Harlow inspired her to give back by donating leftover funds to Project Chance, the organization that trained Harlow, to help other children access life-changing service dogs.

Despite facing mental health challenges, Mallory graduated from high school, works part-time, and plans to pursue further education in veterinary studies. She attributes her achievements to the newfound confidence and independence Harlow has given her, emphasizing the profound impact of their bond. Mallory plans to express her gratitude to the club members who supported her and Harlow by personally thanking them for changing her life. This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of the importance of community, empathy, and support in times of need, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month.

In conclusion, the story of Mallory and Harlow illustrates the power of compassion and unity within a community to overcome challenges and create positive change. By sharing her journey of healing and independence, Mallory hopes to inspire others facing mental health struggles to seek help and find hope. The unconditional love and support of the club members at The Plantation exemplify the transformative impact of kindness and generosity. Mallory’s dedication to giving back to Project Chance reflects her resilience and gratitude for the opportunity to thrive with Harlow by her side. As Mental Health Awareness Month is observed, Mallory’s story serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for those in need of support.
