Black Mesa Golf Club in New Mexico is a memorable and affordable golf course that offers a unique and engaging experience for all types of players. As one of America’s best golf courses for $100 or less, Black Mesa combines affordability with memorability in a way that sets it apart from other courses. The author, Dylan Dethier, shares his personal experience of playing at Black Mesa in 2010 during a year-long journey to play golf in every state in the US. Despite a few mishaps along the way, Black Mesa left a lasting impression on Dethier.

Dethier recalls the affordable greens fees at Black Mesa, especially during the offseason when prices were even lower. He paid a modest amount to play and was immediately struck by the distinct landscape of the course. The mountains and desert surroundings provided a dramatic backdrop for his round of golf, creating a visually stunning and challenging experience. Despite playing alone, Dethier found the solitude to be immersive and focused on the game at hand.

The dramatic elevation changes, stunning views, and isolated feel of the course made for a memorable round of golf at Black Mesa. Dethier navigated through the back nine, encountering wildlife and signs warning of rattlesnakes along the way. Despite feeling both scared and alive, Dethier continued to play well and enjoy the unique challenges of the course. However, a sudden encounter with a pro shop attendant on the 16th hole prompted him to finish his round and reflect on the experience.

The pro shop attendant’s concern for Dethier’s safety due to feral dogs in the area cut short his round at Black Mesa. Despite the abrupt ending, the memories of the course and the experience of playing solo on a challenging and scenic layout stayed with Dethier. He reflects on the unique blend of fear and excitement that he felt during his round and expresses a desire to return to Black Mesa to see how his memories hold up to reality.

Dethier’s personal account of playing at Black Mesa showcases the power of a memorable golf experience, even on a budget. The combination of affordability, stunning scenery, and challenging layout at Black Mesa makes it a standout course for any golfer looking for a unique and engaging round of golf. Dethier’s journey to play golf in every state led him to Black Mesa, where he found a memorable and affordable golf experience that left a lasting impression.
