Massachusetts is home to some of the best golf courses in the country, with the state boasting a rich history of golfing and a diverse range of courses that cater to golfers of all skill levels. As part of GOLF’s recent rankings of the top 100 courses in the U.S. and the top 100 courses you can play, their expert panelists identified the best golf courses in every state. These rankings are now available for golfers to explore and plan their future golf trips using GOLF’s new Course Finder tool, which allows users to filter courses based on criteria such as price, location, and course type.

One of the top golf courses in Massachusetts is The Country Club in Brookline, which has hosted multiple U.S. Opens and the infamous 1999 Ryder Cup. The course’s old-school features and challenging layout make it a favorite among both members and visitors alike. Another top course in Massachusetts is Myopia Hunt in South Hamilton, known for its historic hosting of four U.S. Opens and recent restoration work by Gil Hanse that has elevated its ranking in recent years.

Eastward Ho! in Chatham is another notable course in Massachusetts, designed by Herbert Fowler and known for its unique routing and challenging terrain. Old Sandwich in Plymouth offers a modern classic design with coastal atmospherics and challenging short par-4s, while Essex County in Manchester-by-the-Sea shines for its collection of holes and stunning views of the landscape. Kittansett in Marion, which hosted the Walker Cup in 1953, has undergone a thoughtful restoration by Gil Hanse that has enhanced its reputation as a top golf destination in Massachusetts.

Other top golf courses in Massachusetts include Sankaty Head, Boston GC, Salem, Worcester, Nantucket, Vineyard, Charles River, Winchester, Oyster Harbors, George Wright, Longmeadow, Taconic, Hyannisport, and TPC Boston. These courses offer a diverse range of layouts and challenges for golfers of all skill levels to enjoy. Whitinsville Golf Club, a 9-holer, is also highly regarded by panelists for its unique and challenging design.

GOLF’s course rankings are determined by a panel of expert golfers who evaluate over 600 courses based on various criteria. Panelists rank courses in different “buckets” based on their perceived quality, with points assigned accordingly to determine the final rankings. This process ensures that the rankings are fair, objective, and representative of the collective expertise of the panelists. The diverse backgrounds and experiences of the panelists contribute to the credibility and accuracy of the rankings.
