The U.S. Open at Pinehurst kicked off with some thrilling performances on Day 1. Patrick Cantlay’s impressive start with a 65 put him in a prime position to challenge for a major championship. On the flip side, Matteo Manassero struggled with a poor start, highlighting the challenges of the course. Sergio Garcia’s 25th consecutive U.S. Open appearance was a win for the veteran golfer, while Phil Mickelson’s rough start reminded fans of the difficulties of the tournament.

Martin Kaymer, the 2014 U.S. Open champion, showed signs of a comeback with a solid even-par 70, while Rory McIlroy’s stellar performance tied him at the top with Cantlay. Ludvig Aberg impressed in his U.S. Open debut, dispelling rumors of a knee issue with a strong performance. However, Viktor Hovland struggled with his short game, posting a disappointing score of 8-over.

Brooks Koepka’s rollercoaster round, coupled with his media decline, made for an interesting storyline. Tiger Woods showed promise with his driver but struggled with his irons, a trend that he will need to reverse to stay in contention. Bryson DeChambeau continued his strong form from previous majors, adding excitement to the tournament. Jon Rahm’s absence opened the door for Jackson Suber, who capitalized on the opportunity with a solid 69 in his U.S. Open debut.

Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler faced challenges in their opening rounds, while Tony Finau emerged as a contender with a solid 68. Despite several standout performances, the overall scoring average was relatively low, prompting a desire for more challenging conditions. As the tournament progresses, fans can expect more drama and excitement on the course at Pinehurst. Stay tuned for updates on the latest developments at the U.S. Open.
