The Wells Fargo Championship golf tournament featured a challenging new tee box on the par-4 16th hole at Quail Hollow. The tee box was moved back 20 yards, making the hole even more difficult than before. Despite the change, only three birdies were made on Thursday, with many players struggling to navigate the hole. Webb Simpson, a Quail Hollow member and resident, described the new tee as a “bear” and highlighted the unique challenge it presented.

Max Homa also commented on the new tee box, noting that it made the second shot particularly challenging. He praised the decision to move the tee back, as it gave long hitters an advantage while still requiring precision on the second shot. The changes to the course at Quail Hollow are part of preparations for next year’s PGA Championship, with upgrades to several holes and greens.

In addition to the new tee box on the 16th hole, a new tee was added to the par-3 13th hole, adding 10 yards to the distance. The greens at Quail Hollow were also resurfaced with Tif Eagle Bermudagrass, and slopes were softened on 12 putting surfaces. These changes were made to offer better hole locations at higher green speeds, enhancing the overall playing experience for tournament participants.

The renovations at Quail Hollow also included rebuilding bunkers with new drainage, liners, and sand. This ensures that bunkers are in top condition for the upcoming PGA Championship and future events at the course. The enhancements to the course are aimed at providing a challenging yet fair playing experience for golfers of all skill levels.

Overall, the changes to Quail Hollow have received positive feedback from players, with many expressing excitement about the new challenges presented by the course. The addition of new tee boxes, revamped greens, and improved bunkers have elevated the quality of the course and positioned it as a top destination for championship golf events. As Quail Hollow continues to evolve and improve, it remains a premier venue for competitive and recreational golfers alike.
