Rising Stars: Tyler Mawhinney and Phillip Dunham Named to U.S. Junior National Golf Team for 2026

In a remarkable achievement for local golf, Tyler Mawhinney, hailing from Fleming Island, and Phillip Dunham of Ponte Vedra Beach have both been selected for the United States Golf Association (USGA) Junior National Team for the third consecutive year. This program, designed to foster young talent, aims to nurture the next generation of golfers as part of the U.S. National Development Program established in 2023.

A Prestigious Recognition

The 2026 U.S. Junior National Team features an impressive roster of 24 junior golfers, comprised of 12 boys and 12 girls from across 10 states. Mawhinney and Dunham are among 14 returning players from the previous year, underscoring their consistent performance and potential. This honor not only highlights their individual skill but also reflects the growing talent pool in Florida, a state known for producing exceptional golfers.

Year-Round Support for Young Athletes

Participants in the USGA Junior National Team benefit from a comprehensive support system. This includes expert coaching, performance analysis, sports psychology resources, and nutritional guidance tailored specifically to meet the needs of young golfers. The development program is designed to ensure these talented individuals have the tools necessary to excel in competitive environments, ultimately paving the way for future successes.

Success Stories from the Previous Year

In 2025, the USGA Junior Team members collectively made 34 appearances in various USGA championships. Their participation included nine entries in the U.S. Junior Amateur, eight in the U.S. Amateur, and seven in the U.S. Junior Girls tournaments. This level of competition not only grants players invaluable experience but also increases their visibility in the golf community.

Financial Support for Youth Golfers

As part of its commitment, the USGA allocates funds to assist young athletes with the costs associated with tournament participation. Notably, four members of the U.S. Junior Team will receive grants from the U.S. National Development Program. In total, the USGA has distributed over $865,000 to 109 junior golfers and their families, easing the financial burden of travel, coaching, and equipment needs.

Community Impact: Champion for Child Safety Golf Tournament

In conjunction with the success of young golfers, the Dream Finders Home Champion for Child Safety Pro-Am Golf Tournament recently raised over $533,000 for the Monique Burr Prevention Education Programs. Held at the esteemed Palencia Club, this annual charity event has accumulated more than $6.7 million since its inception in 1994.

A Legacy of Compassion

Edward Burr, the Founder and Board Chairman of the Monique Burr Foundation, expressed his gratitude, stating, “What began as a vision grounded in compassion has grown into a lifeline—one that has served, empowered, and protected countless children." The tournament’s success showcases the community’s commitment to child safety, training nearly 10,000 educators and facilitators across 42 states and six countries.

Recent Golf Successes in Florida

In the arena of competitive golf, teams and individuals continue to make headlines. Recently, a duo comprised of Tyler Gulliksen, assistant golf coach at the University of North Florida, and Ty Capps from Palm Coast clinched the Florida State Golf Association Foursomes Championship. Their remarkable performance, scoring 4-under par 140, marked their fourth consecutive victory in this prestigious event.

Charity Golf Events Making a Difference

The Northeast Florida Division of PulteGroup also made waves with their fourth annual Building Hope Golf Tournament held at Palencia, raising a record-breaking $224,331 for several charities, including Rethreaded and the Five Star Veterans Center. Such events illustrate the significant role golf plays not just in competition, but also in making a meaningful impact in the community.

Young Talent on the Rise

In another exciting event, Ponte Vedra High School senior Easton Oliva showcased his skills at the Florida Junior Tour Harbor Hills Open. By birdieing his last two holes, Oliva secured a four-shot victory over Josh Orgen. His scores of 68-70—138 underscore the depth of talent emerging from Florida’s youth golf scene.

Looking Forward

The future of golf in Florida looks promising with young talents like Mawhinney, Dunham, and Oliva coming into their own. As they continue to develop their skills through supportive programs like the USGA Junior National Team and community initiatives, the dedication to fostering these athletes remains strong. The blend of competitive spirit with a community-oriented approach will undoubtedly lead to even greater accomplishments in the years to come.
