Unlocking the Secret Power Source in Min Woo Lee’s Golf Swing

PGA Tour rookie Min Woo Lee, weighing only 155 pounds, consistently ranks among the leaders in driving distance despite his lean frame. Known for his incredible ball speed and average driving distance of over 300 yards, Lee’s ability to maximize power in his swing has made him a force to be reckoned with on the course. His background in soccer, Australian rules football, and weightlifting provided the strength and athleticism needed to excel in the sport of golf.

Initially skeptical of golf as a “boring old-men’s sport,” Lee’s late introduction to the game allowed him to develop a unique swing style focused on hitting the ball far. Surrounded by older players, he was motivated to match their power off the tee and sought to improve his driving distance. Through trial and error, Lee discovered the power sources that worked best for him, including keeping his arms wide but compact on the backswing to generate speed and distance.

Under the guidance of his coach, Ritchie Smith, Lee’s swing focuses on maintaining wide arms and a compact backswing to optimize power and control. By keeping his hands extended in front of his chest and ahead of the ball through impact, Lee achieves an impressive amount of forward shaft lean and a low launch angle. While this technique may not be conventional, Lee’s ability to control his ball flight and maximize distance sets him apart from other players on tour.

Despite the success of his unique swing style, traditional golf instructors may suggest a different approach for maximizing distance for slower swingers. By catching the ball on the upswing with the shaft leaning away from the target, players can reduce spin and achieve maximum carry distance. However, Lee’s method has proven effective for him and sets a new standard for how power can be generated in a golf swing. As a rising star in the PGA Tour, Lee continues to impress with his incredible driving distance and innovative approach to the game.
