In the latest episode of GOLF Originals, Michael Bamberger discusses the drive and joy that make an unbeatable combination in life, citing Mike Whan as an excellent example. Whan, CEO of the USGA since 2021, is known for his fun and dynamic personality, which Bamberger believes is essential for the high-profile role he holds within the organization. The two spent a day at Palm Valley Golf Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, playing a round of golf with a regular named Louise.

Bamberger and Whan’s conversation covered a wide range of topics, including Whan’s early life, career, and his roles as LPGA Commissioner and USGA CEO. During the round, Bamberger asked Whan about potential rule changes in golf, to which Whan provided insight into the collaborative process behind creating and revising rules at the highest level of the game. He emphasized the importance of involving a diverse group of individuals, including players from different tours and parts of the world, in the rulemaking process.

Whan shared a conversation he had with a PGA Tour player about how rules are developed collaboratively with input from various stakeholders. He highlighted the importance of considering the implications of rule changes on different aspects of the game and ensuring fairness for all players. Bamberger also suggested a rule change regarding white OB stakes playing like red-stakes lateral hazards, to which Whan responded by emphasizing the need to avoid creating unfair advantages for players based on penalty rules.

For more insights from Bamberger and Whan, including Whan’s thoughts on the most challenging aspects of his role as USGA CEO, viewers can watch the full episode of GOLF Originals. Jessica, an editor at Golf.com, provides additional background on her role as a member of Columbia’s female varsity golf team and her responsibilities in producing print and online features for the publication. Jessica also oversees major special projects, such as GOLF’s Style Issue and the original interview series, “A Round With.”

In conclusion, the episode featuring Bamberger and Whan offers a unique perspective on the collaborative process of rulemaking in golf and the leadership qualities that make Whan a suitable figurehead for the USGA. By showcasing Whan’s drive and joy in his role as CEO, Bamberger highlights the importance of passion and personality in leadership positions. The episode serves as a testament to the essential role of communication, collaboration, and fairness in shaping the future of the sport of golf at its highest levels.
