Fred Perpall, CEO of a Dallas architecture firm, has made history as the first Black president of the USGA. His personal story of rising from the inner city of Nassau to success in architecture and golf has given him a unique perspective and an authentic voice as he leads the USGA. Through his passion for golf, Perpall is working to make the game more inclusive and accessible to everyone, especially women and minorities. His leadership style, characterized by his visibility, interaction with players, and advocacy for the game, has brought a new level of communication and energy to the USGA.

Perpall’s journey to golf started relatively late in life, but his dedication and hard work have led to significant improvement in his game. As a high achiever both in sports and academics, Perpall’s approach to golf mirrors his commitment to excellence in all aspects of his life. His progress from a 15 handicap to a 5 at Trinity Forest Golf Club indicates his determination and discipline. With support from mentors like Bob Dedman, Perpall has found a community in golf that has enriched his life and inspired him to give back to the game.

As USGA president, Perpall aims to inspire the next generation of golfers by creating more opportunities for youth, particularly in underserved communities. He believes that golf has the potential to bring people together and foster a sense of community like no other activity. By introducing new programs and initiatives to make golf more accessible and affordable, Perpall hopes to expand the game’s reach and diversify its player base. His vision for the future of golf in America includes building a pipeline from grassroots programs to elite competition, ensuring a strong and diverse golfing community.

Perpall’s leadership style is characterized by his authenticity, passion for the game, and dedication to serving others. His approach to golf reflects his larger philosophy of giving back and making a positive impact on the world. By leveraging his personal story and his unique perspective as an outsider turned leader in golf, Perpall is shaping the USGA’s future and leaving a lasting legacy in the game. As his term as president continues, Perpall remains committed to his mission of promoting inclusivity, diversity, and community through golf.

In a time when golf is experiencing a resurgence in popularity and interest, Perpall’s vision for the game is timely and transformative. His focus on creating opportunities for all and fostering a welcoming environment in golf aligns with the broader cultural shifts towards diversity and inclusion.
