Cypress Point Golf Course in California has recently surpassed Pine Valley in New Jersey as the No. 1 Classic Course built in the U.S. before 1960, according to Golfweek’s Best rankings. This change is based on decimal points as the top courses compete for position on various lists. In 2023, Pine Valley was No. 1 with a 9.62 average rating, while Cypress Point was No. 2 with a 9.60 average rating. This year, Cypress Point averaged 9.62, edging out Pine Valley. Golf course architect Jay Blasi, a rater advisor for Golfweek, shares his thoughts on Cypress Point and its ranking based on Golfweek’s Best rater criteria.

Cypress Point Golf Course is known for its beauty and exclusivity, with golfers dreaming of playing along the stunning coastline that borders the course. The journey at Cypress Point, from the dunes to the forest to the coastline holes, is what sets this course apart. The golfing experience at Cypress Point is a rare opportunity for those lucky enough to receive an invite. From the moment of arrival at the “CYPRESS POINT CLUB – MEMBERS ONLY” sign to teeing off over 17-Mile Drive and navigating the challenging holes, every moment is filled with anticipation and excitement.

The course design at Cypress Point reflects the work of renowned golf course architects Dr. Alister MacKenzie and Marion Hollins. Before MacKenzie was hired, Hollins had commissioned Seth Raynor to design the course, setting the stage for a legendary partnership that produced one of the greatest golf courses of all time. The routing, consistency with the original design, overall land plan, greens and surrounds, as well as the variety and memorability of the par 3s, 4s, and 5s at Cypress Point are all highly rated by Golfweek’s criteria.

The management of trees and landscapes, conditioning, and the overall “Walk in the Park” test at Cypress Point are also highlighted as exceptional aspects of the course. The careful restoration of dune scapes and forests, along with the strategic bunkering and natural landforms used throughout the course, contribute to the allure of Cypress Point. The firm and true playing surfaces, along with the beautiful off-fairway areas, reflect the dedication of the maintenance team led by superintendent Jeff Markow.

For many golfers, a round at Cypress Point is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that leaves a lasting impression. The breathtaking beauty of the setting, the brilliant routing through diverse landscapes, and the memorable holes along the coastline make Cypress Point one of the greatest golf courses in the world. Whether it’s the challenge of teeing off over 17-Mile Drive or the thrill of playing along the rocky coastline with seals as onlookers, Cypress Point offers a golfing experience like no other. If given the chance to play Cypress Point, the answer is always a resounding “Yes, I’m available.”
