Why Is Lexi Thompson Not Competing in the 2025 Evian Championship?

Lexi Thompson’s Absence at the Evian Championship: A Five-Year Streak

For the fifth consecutive year, the renowned golfer Lexi Thompson will not be participating in the Amundi Evian Championship at the picturesque Evian Resort Golf Club in France. Despite her impressive performances at this Major in her early career, Thompson’s recent history with the event has been anything but stellar.

Inaugurated in 2013, the Evian Championship marked the beginning of Thompson’s journey in this prestigious Major. Her debut was outstanding, finishing in third place. The following year, she secured a T10 finish, and by 2015, she emerged as the runner-up. However, since then, her results have sharply declined. After missing the cut for two consecutive years leading up to 2019, Thompson’s frustrations and discontent with the course layout became evident.

Emotional Frustrations and Social Media Backlash

In an emotional outpouring on Instagram after her 2019 performance, Thompson expressed her dissatisfaction: “To play well today, hit one bad golf shot but hit three iron shots right at the pin, only to end up 40+ feet away…umm, really?” She captured her growing frustration with golf’s unpredictability. Thompson noted her relief in not having to endure the challenges for another two days at Evian, visibly marking it as “just not for me.”

The post was quickly deleted, but not before raising eyebrows in the sporting world. Shortly after, she clarified her statements, emphasizing that her words were aimed at the frustrations of playing poorly in a Major. “I didn’t mean it in a mean way at all,” she explained, wishing her fellow competitors well for the event.

The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The 2020 Evian Championship was notably canceled due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, effectively marking a pivotal moment in Thompson’s career trajectory. Since that cancellation, she has not returned to this particular Major, and her absence has become an expected trend in recent years.

In 2021 and 2022, Thompson’s consistent underperformance at the venue added to the anticipation, as fans speculated whether she might return this time around given her recent resurgence in form on the LPGA Tour.

Thompson’s Recent Success on the LPGA Tour

Despite missing the Evian Championship, Thompson has shown signs of a competitive comeback in 2023. With a commendable T4 finish at the Meijer LPGA Classic followed by a T12 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, she proved that she still possesses the golf prowess needed to contend at high levels.

However, her journey has not been without its setbacks. At the recent Dow Championship, Thompson faced disappointment as she and her partner Megan Khang fell just short in a playoff against competitors Jin-hee Im and Somi Lee.

Choosing Personal Time Over Competitions

After the Dow Championship, Thompson announced her decision to take a step back from the competitive scene. “I’m not playing for about five weeks," she disclosed, reflecting on her need for personal downtime. This decision indicates a shift in her priorities, where she aims to strike a balance between life and professional golf.

This absence will also mark the first time since 2018 that she has skipped the AIG Women’s Open, further indicating a strategic approach to her career in light of her evolving priorities.

A Shift in Competitive Focus

In May 2024, Lexi Thompson made headlines when she announced her plan to reduce her competitive appearances. Although it created rumors of retirement, Thompson clarified that her intent was to recalibrate her schedule rather than exit the sport entirely. "I really wanted to dial back my schedule and have more of a life balance," she stated in her clarification, leaving the door open for a potential absence from the sport altogether.

This move showcases Thompson’s desire to prioritize her mental health and personal life. Golf, while a massive part of her identity, is not the sole focus of her overall well-being.

The Future of Lexi Thompson in Professional Golf

Given her recent decisions, Thompson plans to compete around ten times per season moving forward. With eight tournaments already completed this year, fans may find that opportunities to watch her compete will be limited in the second half of the 2023 season.

When she returns, it’s likely to be at the Portland Classic from August 14-17, with other tournaments like the CPKC Women’s Open and FM Championship on the horizon. It’ll be interesting to see if her return can rekindle memories of her former successes or if she’ll continue to navigate the complexities of a reduced schedule.

The Role of Social Media in Modern Golf

Thompson’s journey also illustrates the roles social media plays in the lives of professional athletes today. Her candid posts reveal a vulnerability rarely seen in the sporting arena. While her Instagram post may have stirred controversy, it also painted a portrait of an athlete grappling with the pressures of maintaining performance amidst fluctuating results.

The ability to communicate candidly can foster a closer connection with fans, bridging the gap between competitors and the followers admiring them from afar. Lexi’s experience serves as a reminder of the mental hurdles professional athletes face, layered beneath the compelling exterior they present.

Lexi Thompson’s Legacy in Women’s Golf

As Lexi Thompson continues her journey in the world of women’s golf, her legacy remains a significant influence on aspiring female golfers. With her unmatched talent and remarkable feat of being one of the youngest champions in history, Thompson has left an indelible mark on the sport.

Her journey of highs and lows, triumphs and defeats, encapsulates the essence of golf—a game built on resilience, patience, and the continuous pursuit of greatness. While she may not participate in every Major, her impact resonates far beyond a single tournament, inspiring future generations to take up the sport.

Thompson’s story is far from over. It is a narrative of self-discovery, resilience, and one that continually unfolds as she navigates the intricate path between professional commitment and personal needs. Whether she’s on the golf course or taking time for herself, Lexi Thompson’s influence will forever loom large in the golfing world.
