Max Homa’s Surprising Driver Switch at the American Express: A Deep Dive into Golf’s Latest Gear Trends

Introduction

This week at the American Express, Max Homa has made headlines with the addition of a new driver in his bag – the Cobra OPTM Max-K prototype. This move has raised eyebrows, not least because it’s not the driver he was fit for months prior. As a six-time PGA Tour winner, Homa’s equipment choices provide valuable insights into the latest trends in golf gear.

A Shift in Equipment: From DS-Adapt FX to OPTM Max-K

Last week during the TGL match, Homa was using the Cobra DS-Adapt FX Tour head, a pivotal model that influenced the shaping of Cobra’s new core driver, the OPTM-X. However, as he launched into the 2026 PGA Tour season, he made the unexpected choice to switch to the OPTM Max-K model after a late testing session in Palm Desert.

Driver Specifications

  • Current Model: Cobra OPTM Max-K Prototype
  • Former Model: Cobra DS-Adapt FX
  • PGA Tour Season: 2026

Why the Change?

Driver performance is crucial for any tour professional, and for Homa, there were multiple factors driving this decision. Despite the positive fit of the OPTM-X, Homa was going through swing adjustments with coach Mark Blackburn.

“This driver was the one he hit best,” said Cobra Tour Rep Ben Schomin about the FX model, noting it helped him maintain a consistent delivery and launch angle as he worked through changes in his swing.

Performance Metrics

Homa’s driving performance has notably declined over the last two seasons, ranking 25th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee in 2022 but dropping to 164th and 106th in subsequent years. Since reconnecting with Blackburn, they have focused on improving his posture and ball coverage through impact.

  • Strokes Gained (2022): 25th
  • Strokes Gained (2023): 164th
  • Strokes Gained (2024): 106th

As a result, Homa sought a driver that provided a higher launch without needing to "lift" the ball, making the LSK driver a fitting choice.

Prototype Insights

The OPTM Max-K prototype, first used by Gary Woodland, is a "working prototype." While it shares a similar shape with the standard Max-K, it features a lower and deeper center of gravity (CG) to optimize spin and promote a natural fade bias. This design change has enabled Homa to swing with more freedom, recovering from a drop in clubhead speed of about 1 mph in recent years.

A Look at Current Trends

Homa isn’t alone in his driver choice, signaling a growing trend among PGA Tour professionals for more forgiving heads. This season has seen only four low-spin drivers in play compared to a significant number of higher forgiveness models.

  • Top Models in Play:
    • Titleist GT3 (low-spin)
    • TaylorMade Qi10
    • Ping G440 LST (high-forgiveness)

Notable Wedge Trends at the Amex

This week also marked the launch of Titleist’s SM11 wedges, dominating as the most played wedge model at the American Express. A staggering 52 players opted for 149 SM11 wedges out of a field of 154.

Key Details:

  • Wedges in Play: 149
  • Notable Players Using SM11: Billy Horschel, Russell Henley, and more

Conclusion

Max Homa’s unexpected switch to the Cobra OPTM Max-K prototype driver at the American Express illustrates the dynamic nature of professional golf and the importance of equipment in optimizing performance. As golfers strive for better results, trends toward forgiveness in driver design and the use of innovative prototypes are on the rise.
