In 2025, I had the unique opportunity to explore several new golf courses, but none captured my enthusiasm quite like Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington. Not only is this public gem renowned for hosting the 2015 U.S. Open, but my visit there surpassed all preconceived notions.
Unpacking My Expectations
When I planned my trip to Chambers Bay, three key factors shaped my expectations:
- 2015 U.S. Open Insight: The tournament, won by Jordan Spieth, was riddled with criticism of bumpy greens and an unconventional course setup.
- Family Feedback: My father had previously played Chambers Bay and expressed his dislike for the course, which added an element of skepticism.
- Recent Praise: In contrast, course renovations and accolades from golf enthusiasts like Dylan Dethier highlighted its resurgence, particularly after hosting the 2022 U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Despite mixed signals, my trip to Bend, Oregon, and Seattle presented a perfect opportunity to explore this storied course firsthand.
Securing a Tee Time
Upon trying to book a tee time a month in advance, I discovered that availability was scarce. The late autumn weather in the Pacific Northwest could be unpredictable, and I was uncertain about demand. However, I was fortunate to join a waiting list, and within two hours, I received a text offering a spot at 10:36 a.m. This allowed me ample time to drive from Seattle and still make it back for an evening dance class with my fiancée.
I joined a delightful group—a father and his two sons from Pittsburgh—creating a friendly atmosphere for our round.
An Ideal Golfing Day
Coming off three dismal days of weather in Bend, I was pleasantly surprised by the sunny skies greeting me at Chambers Bay. This former sand quarry, set against the picturesque backdrop of Puget Sound, felt deceptively warm with temperatures in the mid-50s.
Upon arrival, the parking lot offers a striking view of the course. After checking in, players are shuttled down to the first tee and driving range, which features a newly added halfway house.
Opting for the blue tees at 6,748 yards—one step behind the championship tees—was advised by the pro shop staff, who humorously noted that you should have experience playing in a U.S. Open to access the full length.
First Impressions
The first hole is truly representative of what the day will offer. A challenging downhill par-4 stretching nearly 500 yards sets the tone, complete with an elevated green and stunning views. I managed to hit my best shots of the day here: a powerful drive followed by a perfect 7-iron approach that led to an opening birdie. It was a moment of disbelief—was this really the course discussed in the past?
The renovations since the U.S. Open have made the links-style course more enjoyable, but the layout still presents opportunities for high scores amidst exciting play.

The Round Continues
As I navigated the course, the elevation changes of approximately 200 feet from the Puget Sound to Grandview Drive challenged my depth perception. Certain tee shots required precise placement, especially on holes like No. 5, No. 8, and No. 10, where threading the needle became essential.
Notably, the 12th hole—a drivable par-4—surprised me. My mini-driver came to rest just short of the green, but with a simple uphill putt left for eagle. Was it luck? Perhaps, but it felt strategic.

The last climb before a thrilling finish leads down to holes 14-17, which run alongside the BNSF Railroad tracks. This adds a unique charm, reminiscent of renowned Scottish courses. During my round, I counted 15-20 trains passing by—an element I thoroughly enjoyed.
Capturing the Moment
The signature lone fir tree behind the 15th green presented a perfect photo opportunity, especially as a train rolled by in the background. After an earlier birdie on the 13th, I found myself at even par, but bogeys on the 15th, 17th, and 18th ultimately brought me to a 75. Though the score felt disappointing, the exhilaration of playing Chambers Bay overshadowed any frustrations.

Securing my tee time, relishing in perfect weather, and experiencing one of America’s great public golf courses made my day truly unforgettable. For any golf enthusiast seeking adventure, Chambers Bay should undoubtedly be on your radar for a remarkable golfing experience.
