2024 Olympics: American medal hopes washed away by water polo goals

The Team USA golfers Nelly Korda, Lilia Vu, and Rose Zhang did not make it to the medal stand at the Olympics due to their struggles with water hazards at Le Golf National. Despite making 42 birdies and two eagles collectively, they placed outside the top positions in the tournament. Zhang had the best finish among the Americans, falling short of the bronze medal by two shots after a strong birdie on the final hole. On the other hand, Korda, the defending gold medalist, had a challenging week with several costly mistakes, including a quadruple bogey and a triple bogey.

Despite ranking high in strokes gained categories like off the tee and approach, Korda struggled with her putting throughout the tournament, finishing 50th in strokes gained/putting. She acknowledged the need to avoid compounding mistakes and maintain control during her rounds. Zhang, a first-time Olympian, also expressed mixed feelings about her performance, citing a few key errors that prevented her from contending for a medal. Both players recognized the impressive performance of Lydia Ko, who claimed the gold medal in the tournament.

While the American golfers did not achieve their desired results, they emphasized the value of participating in the Olympics and gaining valuable experience from the event. Korda highlighted the importance of gratitude for both successes and setbacks in her career, aiming to mature and grow from every opportunity. Zhang, inspired by Ko’s historic victory, reflected on the mentorship and support she received from fellow athletes, expressing her determination to continue improving and pushing forward in her career.

Ultimately, the golfers emphasized the resilience and growth mindset needed to navigate the challenges of elite competition, acknowledging the highs and lows that come with the sport. Despite facing adversity and falling short of their medal aspirations, they drew inspiration from their fellow athletes and the Olympic spirit, demonstrating a positive attitude towards their experiences in Paris. The lessons learned from the tournament will serve as motivation for their future endeavors in golf and ensure continued growth and development in their careers.
