Alyssa Godfrey and the 2023 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship

Alyssa Godfrey, an OB/GYN Physician Assistant, has temporarily shifted her focus from delivering babies to chasing birdies at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship. This prestigious event is set to kick off at the picturesque Monterey Peninsula Country Club in Pebble Beach, California, where Godfrey will be one of 132 competitors. Open to women aged 25 and older, the championship requires participants to have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 9.4. Golfers qualify through various qualifying sites nationwide, making this event a hallmark of skill and commitment.

Godfrey, a former competitive junior golfer from New York, brings a unique perspective to the championship. Despite attending Wake Forest University, she did not partake in the Division I golf program. After a hiatus post-college, she regained her passion for the sport at Meadow Brook Club on Long Island. Notably, she qualified for the Mid-Am on her first attempt this year, joining two fellow club members in this elite competition.

Reflecting on her journey, Godfrey emphasizes the growth she has experienced as an adult golfer. She cherishes the opportunities to engage in local women’s tournaments. "It’s a wonderful community of adult women to play with," she mentions. Her lack of formal training hasn’t deterred her; instead, it fuels her passion for the game as she embraces each challenge with newfound patience.

In a field populated with accomplished professionals, Godfrey stands out, not only for her golf skills but also for her career in healthcare. The competition also includes prominent figures such as NBC Sports and Golf Channel’s Emilia Doran and LPGA hopeful Brooke Seay, adding a layer of intrigue to the championship. Godfrey’s journey is a testament to balancing demanding careers with personal passions, inspiring many to pursue their own interests alongside professional obligations.

Balancing golf with her profession is no small feat. Godfrey dedicates herself to playing two to three times weekly, thanks to her supportive colleagues at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. She has cleverly structured her work schedule around golf tournaments, allowing her to participate fully without sacrificing her job in women’s health. This balance speaks volumes about the support dynamics at play in both her professions.

Appreciating the emotional support from her team, Godfrey shares that many of her colleagues are aware of her golfing achievements. "I have three attendings who texted me this morning, cheering me on," she says, highlighting the camaraderie that exists within her workplace. This backing not only motivates her but also reinforces the idea that pursuing passions outside of work is necessary for personal fulfillment.

The upcoming championship entails a rigorous format, starting with 36 holes of stroke play over the weekend. The top 64 players will progress to match play, with an exciting week of golf scheduled ahead. Godfrey is committed to showcasing her skills and is eagerly anticipating the chance to compete against some of the best female golfers in the country.

The tournament schedule is set, with the stroke play rounds commencing on October 4th and 5th. Match play rounds will initiate on October 6th, leading up to the championship match on October 9th. Fans and enthusiasts can expect high-level competition, with live scoring updates available for those wishing to follow the action closely.

Godfrey’s participation isn’t merely about competition; it reflects her love for the game, the community, and the journey she’s embarked upon. As she prepares to tee off in this exciting championship, she embodies the spirit of women’s golf, where talent meets determination. Her dual role as a healthcare professional and a competitive golfer offers a refreshing perspective on the balance between career and passion.

As the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship unfolds, all eyes will be on players like Alyssa Godfrey, who redefine what it means to be a successful athlete. Whether delivering health care or aiming for birdies, Godfrey continues to inspire, demonstrating that with the right support and dedication, one can excel in multiple arenas.
