5 candid reflections from my inaugural TGL encounter

The TGL Playoffs have arrived, and the New York Golf Club faced off against the Los Angeles Golf Club in the first round. As a golf enthusiast, I decided to attend the match at the SoFi Center in south Florida to experience the event in person. While I had watched TGL matches on TV during the winter, I was curious to see how the live experience compared. Here are five key takeaways from my first TGL match.
First and foremost, the SoFi Center was an impressive facility. The simulator, with a listed size of 64×46 feet, felt even larger in person. The scale of the rotating putting green and the overall arena left me extremely impressed. However, the size of the space also had a downside as the open areas created a somewhat subdued atmosphere during the match. Despite the efforts to hype up the fans with LED lights and a rowdy MC, the energy in the arena felt lacking at times.
While the action on the field was fast-paced, it wasn’t always edge-of-your-seat entertainment. The crowd’s reaction mirrored that of a baseball game, with fans not necessarily locked in on every shot but fully engaged during key moments. Despite the lack of constant excitement, the overall experience was enjoyable. I suggested the addition of cheap seats to enhance the atmosphere, providing an affordable option for fans to enjoy the event and create a rowdier, less corporate environment.
One area that could be improved is the incorporation of player commentary from the broadcast into the arena experience. The banter between players is a significant aspect of the format, and including it in the live setting would enhance the overall experience. Additionally, showcasing viral moments on the big screen during breaks could further engage the audience. Despite these areas for growth, I left the match impressed with the TGL and excited to see how the event evolves in future seasons.
As an assistant editor for GOLF.com, I have a background in golf and sports media. My experience at the TGL match provided valuable insights into the live event experience and potential improvements for future matches. Overall, the TGL Playoffs offer a unique and exciting opportunity for golf fans to engage with the sport in a new format. With room for growth and development, the TGL has the potential to become a staple in the golf entertainment industry. I look forward to following the progress of the TGL in the coming seasons and witnessing its evolution.
