When it comes to ranking the best golf courses in the country, opinions vary, but some courses like Augusta National and Pine Valley are commonly viewed as the best. GOLF’s 2024-25 Top 100 Courses in the U.S. and Top 100 Courses You Can Play rankings provide a comprehensive list of the top golf courses in America, as assessed by expert course raters. However, the opinions and experiences of readers also play a significant role in determining the best golf courses in the country. In a recent survey conducted by GOLF, several interesting factoids and tee-time fantasies emerged from the readers’ responses.

One of the key findings from the survey was that there is no unanimous decision on the best golf course in the country. While Pine Valley has traditionally held the top spot, Augusta National, Pebble Beach, and Cypress Point also garnered significant votes from readers. The survey revealed that 34 percent of readers see Pine Valley as the best course, while 28 percent voted for Augusta National, showcasing the diversity of opinions among golf enthusiasts.

Access to exclusive courses like Pine Valley and Augusta National is a major point of interest for golfers. The survey found that a majority of respondents did not know someone who had played these prestigious courses, highlighting the allure of these exclusive clubs. However, a small percentage of readers had the opportunity to play Pine Valley or Augusta National themselves, underscoring the exclusivity of these top-tier golf destinations.

When it comes to budgeting for a round of golf, the survey indicated that a significant portion of respondents would not pay more than $100 to play a top 100 course. This preference for affordability presents a challenge, as most top courses command higher green fees, making them less accessible to golfers on a budget. Additionally, the survey revealed that the majority of respondents consider the architects of a course when choosing where to play, showing a keen interest in the design and layout of golf courses.

Among the favorite course designers mentioned in the survey, Donald Ross and Dr. Alister MacKenzie emerged as popular choices among readers. Classic “Golden Age” architects like Ross garnered significant votes, while contemporary designers like Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw also received praise from respondents. The survey highlighted the preferences of readers for specific course designers, showcasing their appreciation for the craftsmanship and vision of these architects.

Coastal and links-style golf emerged as the preferred golfing style among readers, with a majority expressing a preference for courses near the ocean. Parkland and mountain golf also garnered significant votes, indicating a diverse range of golfing preferences among respondents. The survey also addressed the excitement factor of different types of golf holes, with short par-5s and short par-3s being the most thrilling for readers, rather than drivable par-4s.

Overall, the survey conducted by GOLF provided valuable insights into the preferences and opinions of readers when it comes to the best golf courses in the country. From favorite course designers to preferred golfing styles, the survey shed light on the diverse interests and experiences of golf enthusiasts. As the golfing landscape continues to evolve, these insights will inform future rankings and discussions surrounding the top golf courses in America.
